Listening to bands of a given subgenre that are new to me is like having a particular dish at a bunch of different restaurants I'd never been to before, only to find almost none of them appeal compared to the versions of the dish I've developed a taste for. I've figured out too well exactly what I like, so they have to either match that or have some newfangled point of difference. Unless I made a connection by seeing the band live or hearing them years ago or something.

And what makes or breaks a band for me is mostly the vocals, along with production to a lesser degree. All in a way that doesn't align well with what everyone else gets hyped about, so searching can get tiring. Being a picky motherfucker is a skill!

Eating the same food all the time is a horrible existence to me. I suppose I’m always trying something new. Even if it might be gross.

i haven't exactly deep-dived the year but it's probably my #1 too, it's kind of shallow i guess but i don't give a shit when basically every song is huge.

The Absurd's only two songs (both included on the 2021 EP too) but imo it's easily their best stuff since the debut.

I think this sounds pretty much like what I've felt like for the last 20 years or so. Nowadays, I may discover a new band I really do like every other year. The positive aspect of this is that it allows me to listen more often to the new albums I buy as well as to older stuff I still do love. I only have got time to listen to music for about 3-4 hours each day (a bit more on weekends and during holidays). I've got currently about 800 albums (metal and non-metal) and I listen to about 120 to 150 of them each year, to some only once, whereas the most-played get up to 150 spins (sometimes even more) per year. Thus if I bought 50 new albums each year (like I did in the late eighties/early nineties), it would be impossible to listen to them as often as the few new albums I buy nowadays, let alone to listen to older albums I still love as much as I want to.

    Main list 2.0 (revised autism):

    1. Macabre - Carnival of Killers
The masters of darkly comical serial killer grind. Still the 2020 album I reach for the most. I enjoy all the goofy non-metal elements too, fuck the whingers. Also Dennis the Menace's drumming is always such a pleasure to hear.

    2. Repuked - Dawn of Reintoxication
Potent mixture of Autopsy, Entombed and Pungent Stench. Just how I like it. Sleazy, doomy, punky, with sewer-soaked riffs and huge drum fills. Their best album to date.

    alphaville.jpg
    3. Imperial Triumphant - Alphaville
Endlessly interesting jazzy technical avant-garde black/death metal weirdness, conjuring images of destructive greed and social decay.

    4. Isengard - Vårjevndøgn
Amazing heavy/rock/doom material from Fenriz's archives, recorded between 1989 and 1993. Might be my favourite of anything under the Isengard name. Fuck bedroom black metal, this is bedroom doomrock. Raw and wild with so much good riffing. Reminds me at times of Manilla Road. Not sure why @Bloopy is on the cover though.

    5. Slave Hands - No More Feelings
Finnish sludge metal that is totally dismal and hostile. Right up there with bands like Meth Drinker and Fistula for me. Definitely none of that cute atmospheric shit, not stoner either. Straight up overdose and pass out on the traintracks shit. Sampling Hereditary in the intro was a nice move. Put it out on CD though!

    6. Undergang - Aldrig i livet
Muddy death metal caked in gravedirt. Top tier puked vocals. The doomy breakdown moments are so fuckin' heavy man. Also the drumming is really awesome and catchy, check out "Menneskeæder" for example.

    7. Khthoniik Cerviiks - Æequiizoiikum
At one point this was my AOTY, but I just stopped listening to it as much. I was probably listening to it too much at the time. But anyways relistening to it last night confirmed that it still hits me right in the brain. Closest thing to black metal in my list, but it's more of the Voivodian prog and Gorgutsian death metal that I appreciate than any of the blacker elements. Just a weirdo alien album of dissonant extreme metal.

    8. Couch Slut - Take a Chance on Rock 'n' Roll
I've probably said it before but this band sounds like a "rape and revenge" film transformed into noise rock/sludge metal music. Lyrically uncomfortable to say the least. Sounds traumatised and angry as fuck.

    9. Final Exit - ノイズの若大将 (Young Guy of Noize)
14 minutes of surfgrind by two legends of the Japanese scene. Pure chaos with brief moments of beach relaxation. I just wish it was longer (and on CD)!!!

    10. Void Moon - The Autumn Throne
The only trad doom album that really had an impact on me in 2020 and it still holds up really well. Melancholic, sombre Swedish doom that more or less comes from the mould of bands like Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice, Count Raven etc. Very catchy, I catch myself humming a chorus randomly while doing chores or working. Good solid stuff.

    Honourable mentions:
    11. Gjendød - Angrep
    12. Tottal Tømming - Tankeskrekk
    13. Sadistic Drive - Anthropophagy

I'm going to assume that Vanished Cadavers would top my list for this year. I was not keeping up at all so it would take some work to figure out the rest.
