I find it strange how often comedians seem to ditch the comedy and just focus on social commentary. Not that I mind, I like social commentary... But I'm always left thinking "aren't you supposed to be making jokes?" Some of the best comedians I see are ones who are joking about just nonsensical shit.

I didn't like this clip but to be fair I don't like much stand up comedy in the first place.

I like Sarah Silverman 'cause she's hot.

    True dat!

I didn't think it was very funny, and I get tired of dumb stereotypes. Racial stereotypes seem funnier, but all stereotypes obviously have the potential to offend people. I am usually not offended by racial stereotypes, but I often am with stereotypes about Christianity. I guess it's the nature of stereotyping. It takes away individuality, and it also often misunderstands the true nature of things.

Sarah Silverman annoys me too. I saw that video she did (the "fucking Matt Damon" one) and I thought, meh, that's kind of funny. Then I saw Jimmy Kimmel's response (the "fucking Ben Affleck" one) and I laughed my ass off. His was so much better. Obviously it was enhanced by Sarah's video, but he just has a much better personality, I think. Sometimes I think that he's dating her just to make himself look funnier.

    Matthew 4:17

"From that time Jesus began to proclaim, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.'"

I guess that can mean shut the fuck up.

    Lame comedian.

Most of them aren't clever or talented enough to do that. Social commentary is a lot easier to write, perform and sell.

    Carlos Mencia is pretty funny.

I think social commentary is a lot of what makes us laugh, you just gotta find the things we all (most) relate to, but don't think about, and describe it in a way that makes people laugh.

OMG u guys have to take everything so serious and analyze every little bit of it till you lose the point... that it's comedy!!! regardless of what subject matter the comedian undertakes... countless times i see you guys make threads attacking christianity or making stereotypes about it but if a comedian does it then they are lame... and also i notice you guys tend to be prejudicial towards female comedians... I would suspect if a male comedian had done the same routine Margaret did your posts would be different...

ahhh comedy is usuall meant to offend and not take everything so serious... that there are problems in this world and we should joke about them for a little while to forget about ours and the worlds problems... its suppose to entertain and not meant to be analyzed... you have taken what was suppose to be comedy about christians and made it a whole issue out of it... and as for why stereotypes of christians offend you... hmmm could be because your christian and can't have a sense of humor about your own religion? ...

Btw Margaret doesn't only stereotype religion... she also stereotypes such subjects as her own race (Koreans/asians), her mom, gays/lesbians/bisexuals (she's bi) etc... if you can't laugh about yourself or others then you take life too serious and have no sense of humor... stop analyzing or over analyzing everything... takes the fun of things... some of you do the same with music...

Well, I find most stand-up comedians aren't really funny for a number of reasons, and usually the crowd awards them, like a 'sympathetic' laughter of "oh he's trying, let's give him a laugh". I have a sense of humour but I'll laugh if I find to be funny, and I'm not the kind of person who'll will force a brief laugh with every attempt at a joke - people who do this really annoy me.

As for female comedians, I'm not sure that I've ever seen a good one...? I'm not saying there isn't, I just haven't seen any good ones or that I can remember. Though at least this one didn't talk about gender stereotypes, sex, or her ex/current bf. Points for that.

You can tell from the clip that the audience is not giving her "sympathetic" laughter... they are genuinely enjoying themselves and are laughing because it is funny... the "comedians" who do get "sympathy" laughs are the ones who do not last or can fill a venue... she has been around for quite some time and does fill venues...

As for her not talking about gender stereotypes, sex, current ex bf etc... she does (like I stated about her race, her mom, gays/bi's since she is bi etc.)but just not in that clip... but seriously tell me what comedian doesn't talk about such things whether a male or female comedian? ... most if not all do sometime in their career or throughout their career... but seriously it's jokes about a certain group and not social commentary like a news story... stop taking everything so serious... o_O

I was talking in general, but for me personally I'd rather watch a stand-up comedian who at least has some originality to their act. I know that's relatively rare, but comedians who talk solely about stereotypes (of any kind) usually are a turn-off for me.

Like Canadian comedians are great, and there's thousands of them! But I don't care to hear about the Canadian stereotype, especially when it's something done all the time - and if you want to say "eh" after every sentence go right ahead, just don't do it for the sake of it because you're Canadian. 99% of people I've met or known, never use the word.

Also black Comedians who talk about societal issues they have regarding their skin colour etc.

    That wasn't funny.
    Although I "heh"ed when she said "Spongebob...is a sponge."
    Just a rant, though.

It wasn't funny to me because it lacked any real insight to the issue. Comedians are funny when they take familiar experiences and add a new perspective. This clip didn't add anything. I already knew that Christians were hypocrites.
