I finally got around to COD: Ghosts. Man what a letdown. You have to sit through endless cut scenes, tedious voiceovers while it loads levels, a storyline as implausible as Black Ops 2 (I laughed at the carrier named for Obama. Never gonna happen), and the whole fucking game is on rails. No dead ends where you could get lost or pitfalls that are just how things are in war. Nope. Your path is laid out. Your comrades are useless fighters. You have to shoot pretty much every enemy soldier yourself.

The only saving grace is Reilly. They did a great job with the dog.

In hindsight, I shouldn't have. All of the Call of Duty games are developed FOR the XBox, and then ported to the PC. The Xbox being so damn old has a limited chip and GPU and only so much AI. That's why Battlefield is so much more advanced than COD. It's written for the PC. Unfortunately it's a buggy, broken mess.

Maybe the CODs will get better now that we have the XBox One with an advanced CPU and GPU.

For the record, I did not put those links in around Xb*x in my above post. The UM board must have done it.

I've been replaying the Final Fantasy playstation games lately thanks to Liverslapper helping me with a PS emulator. Man, they sure do parallel Elder Scrolls in my opinion.

VII=Morrowind. Objectively the deepest, less streamlined, more to do.
VIII=Oblivion. Completely ruined by level scaling. (Still love both games)
IX-Skyrim. Dumbed down tremendously but focuses more on whats important. Also drastic improvements with artstyle.

They just changed with the times and technology. That's really all they have in common. Aside from being RPGs of course.

well they're like RPG/FPS hybrids, like most games are becoming these past 5-10 years.

It seems like a post was skipped before replies were made or something? I was replying directly to John's post about the FF and TES games. I thought Stormo was just tossing a random post trying to be funny...

You thought wrong, dude. You said Final Fantasy games are RPG and they're really not. I only added the grenade to show I was aware of how many friendships, marriages and political alliances have ended because of this particular subject.

So I guess they are shooter/hybrids? Or are you just being facetious and mean that they are JRPGs? Which makes no sense anyway since JRPG/WRPG are still "RPGs".

Because seriously, if you're suggesting that the FF games were never considered console RPGs and that people actually argue about that shit...uh, I have no fucking idea what planet you live on.

http://www.ign.com/top/rpgs/1 < that would totally be my pick too, at least as far as the FF games go.

Shin Megami Tensei IV > Everything on that list.

I'm not trying to start arguments, sorry guys. I know I should change the way I post in this thread.

RPG's are role-playing games. In order to play a role, you need to have choice and consequence. The player makes choices in his character's name, and they have consequences on the game world; the characters, the story, and everything else. There is no role-playing involved in a Final Fantasy game - the entire story is railroaded. Just because it's got stats doesn't mean it's an RPG.

Ironically, I totally agree with your opinion on this. I mean, just look at the Diablo or Souls series. Everyone seems to love to call them "RPGs", and I laugh every fucking time someone truly believes that they are.

Sadly, most video game developers don't care about your opinion. Even if a game doesn't have 50 different possible endings, doesn't have true "class customization" or the ability to wildly veer off and do whatever (lol "sandbox" and "openworld") you want, whenever you want, as far as video games go, it doesn't matter.

Someone decided in the mid 80s what it took for computer and console games to be considered role-playing games, and even if you don't agree, it's still used as an easily identifiable marker as to what you are possibly getting yourself into. It was probably a lot easier to just call many games RPGs instead of "linear, story based, stats driven, loot driven, dungeon driven, party driven, adventure game".

Like it or not, most, but not all of the games listed as "RPG" have more similarities with PnP RPGs than they do first person shooters, sidescrollers/platformers and fighting games.

And by your logic, the only "real" RPGs would be PnP based, or possibly MUD based. Which technically, it's true, but it makes genre classifications a lot more messy.

Conversely, practically every single game where you control a character that is not you personally, would be considered an RPG too. Look at actors. You can't say that they aren't role-playing, and they are almost always reading from a predefined script.

The short version is that I just visited an aunt I had not seen in almost fourteen years. I was a lot closer with her than my mother until there was a big blowout that had less to do with me and just a bunch of other shit in her life. Anyway, she was the person who got me hooked on video games. I had already been playing early 80s arcade games when I was really young, but that was only maybe once every few weeks, or just Asteroids at the local Boys Club. When she brought home an Atari with a bunch of games, I was pretty much ruined from there on out.

She was never really big on gaming herself, until one night I brought over my Genesis and was playing Shining in the Darkness. She sat there and watched me play it for a few hours without saying a word. I asked her if she wanted to try it out, and told her she could borrow my system if she wanted. So from that point on she basically played just about every RPG or Strategy RPG game that was released for the Genesis, SNES and PSX.

Anyway, she had a library of more PS2 RPGs than I even knew existed and says she finished them all, except for one that she really liked, but thought was really hard. She really blew my mind when she pulled out...

Oh, and she absolutely hated Fable 2/3 and FFXIII

She had a 360 and PS3 of her own, but ended up giving them to her son-in-law because she said there was nothing on them that she liked. I guess I'd not be impressed with the systems either if the only RPGs (shut up Stormo!) I knew about where those mentioned above.

Bought her Skyrim for her birthday and watched her stumble with the first person perspective briefly before having her try out something more her speed (Lost Odyssey, which also convinced her to rebuy the 360). She also liked Fallout: New Vegas, Dragon's Dogma (!!!) and Kingdoms Of Amalur.

Also tried getting her to play the ME2 demo, but it was pretty bad. Some day...
Next visit I am bringing my PS3 and Valkyria Chronicles.

Help! Help! I'm being oppressed! Come see the violence inherent in the system!

Also, awesome about your aunt, man. I just goes to show that people who really aren't into video games realize that there's much more to the hobby that it seems, if they just give it an honest chance. Cool that she did, and even cooler that she had no qualms about asking to try it out.

... Fuck you, Jane. I was gutted at letting you die, but no way Kenny had to die just to protect you from your own stupid, and downright evil plan.
