Well, I have some friends who really are into this genre and have heard some and kinda liked. Just asking for recommendations because I'd like to know more about the genre.

Wow, I never figured you would say that. I actually have a soft spot for them (when that fucking miserable annoying dude isn't singing).

Graveworm is mosty considered "Symphonic Black Metal" but isn't some of their newer stuff considered "Gothic Metal"?? They fucking rule.

Since everyone is going the gothic metal route I'll recommend some miscellaneous gothic music. Which is tricky because aside from gothic rock it's not really a clearly defined genre and a lot of bands with dark, romantic/depressing music get labeled gothic.

Here's some bands that are undeniably part of the 80's/90's gothic music scene:

Sisters of Mercy (pretty much the defining band for the "goth rock" genre)
The Cure (I assume this warrants no explanation)
Fields of the Nephilim (Elizium is a masterpiece)
    Bauhaus
    Christian Death
    Mephisto Walz
    Siouxsie & The Banshees

There's also some second tier goth rock bands like The Mission and Rosetta Stone that are worth a listen if you like the Sisters of Mercy's sound.

Then there's more recent popular takes on gothic rock (which sounds very different from the 80's style) such as Danzig, Type O Negative and Placebo. I can think of a few more but none I'd actually recommend listening to.

New-wave and post-punk (goth rock is a form of post-punk anyway) bands like Joy Division and Depeche Mode are usually lumped under the goth umbrella as well. And then there's harder to classify bands like 16 Horsepower, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Death in June, Current 93, Coil, Dead Can Dance, Swans, etc. that are often also highly appreciated by people who listen to gothic music but I wouldn't strictly define any of them as gothic music alone. Basically a lot of industrial, neo-folk and darkwave fits that description.

Most things classified "gothic metal" are pretty terrible and not really worth listening to in my opinion.

    Sentenced is goth? o_0
And Danzig rules many goth, metal or any type of band along with old Misfits, Graves is good but Only SUCKS. Well I've already heard some of the bands you have told but i think they are just the most popular so are easy to find. Thanks for the recommendations and if you have any more tell me please.

I don't like that genre that much but here you go:

    Celtic Frost (Monotheist I mean)
    Lacuna Coil
    Paradise Lost
    My Dying Bride

Lacuna Coil are awful (and so are ex-death metal bands for the most part).

    Check out:

    Skinny Puppy
    Bauhaus
    The Sisters of Mercy
    The Banshees
    Black Ice

For some reason I was thinking the thread was about gothic rock but, whatever, check those bands out anyways.

Early Tristania is pretty much the duck's nuts when it comes to high quality gothic metal.

Since Nightwish, there's a true wave for gothic/rock/metal. I'm familliar with this kind.

    After Forever
    Epica
    Sirenia
    Tristania
    Within Temptation
    Katra
    Nightwish
    The Lovecrave
    Xandria
    Season's End
    Markize
    Asrai
    Imperia
    Mandrake
    Malice In winderland
    Charon
    Beseech (now Mary Major)
    Mortal Love
    SaraLee
    Beautiful Sin
    H.I.M.
    L'Âme Immortelle
    Impressions of winter
    Krypteria
    Sleepthief
    Lullacry
    Die Laughing
    Entwine
    The syns of thy beloved
    To/Die/For
    Eyes of Eden
    Shadowplay
    Delain
    Bella Morte

    and A LOT more...

These bands share something together, they are gothic influenced...influenced means they show some affinity with the gothic roots. Vocal, melancholy, rythmn, technique, lyrics, style in general. In 2008, almost everything is rated 'Goth' please be careful to all these commercials bands.

True gothic metal is something you've never heard if you're under 30 years old. Some bands like 69 eyes or bella morte keep playing the 'real' kind. Mostly electronic and arranged vocals are those roots.

    Today we just can't name all the style : death-goth, prog-death-goth, hardcore-goth, batcave-goth, newwave-goth, melodic-goth, power-metal-goth, symphonic-goth, symphonic-melodic-goth...and many more.

And to close this chapter : Evanescence or lacuna coil to me are NOT goth, they are like any pop/rock band dressed in black, weeping mascara, playing slow tempo songs with a stronger guitar distortion. plz be careful :)

    Take care everyone

Alright something more obscure then, Phil Shöenfelt & Southern Cross (and the stuff released just as himself before Southern Cross was added to the name). If you have heard Fields of the Nephilim and want something somewhat similar in sound (but not nearly as essential really) as them you could try Love Like Blood.

How can you say this and then still list things like Within Temptation and H.I.M. in your list. Lacuna Coil has more right to call themselves a gothic metal band than Nightwish has ever had because unlike Nightwish they actually have something in common with gothic music. Nightwish is just plain power metal (and I mean plain in every possible sense of the word there).

Alien Sex Fiend and Sex Gang Children is supposedly good goth rock bands, I don't think so though but I have never heard a good goth rock band so maybe my opinion isn't the best in this thread. : p

Sex Gang Children, like early Christian Death, are an acquired taste. I don't like them much myself either. I've only heard a few Alien Sex Fiend songs that my friend sent me but never cared about them enough to seek out an album.

What have you misunderstood? I listed all gothic influenced bands. Right below, "True gothic metal is something you've never heard if you're under 30 years old".

In fact, NONE of these bands are 100% gothic. not even Lacuna.

You're free to get your own gothic definition.

Man, listen to Cairath on this one. Fields of the Nephilim's "Elizeum" is completely phenominal. And most bands today who are considered Goth-Metal are garbage.

Some of them are SO commercial, and many others are intelligent and honest. I worked out with some of them and am very proud of it.

I never expected goth music among major labels, but some of them trying to re-invent the syle. It's like a joke to me. Remember, goth was born from punk music and always used to be very democratic and against the big industry. Now you can buy their new album at McDonald's...geez

Fields of the Nephilim IS goth
