I really need to get a hold of a decent quality recording bass. I have heard everyone mention the Mexican Jazz Bass but the are just beyond my Budget for a bass at the moment.

What other basses do you guys recommend in that price range? I LOVE the Bass tones that Ola gets. Just gritty nasty throaty and mean!!

    Thanks

Where are you located? You shouldn't have any trouble finding an import Fender for under $500.

Shes not "the wife" legally. I just call her that cause shes my wife plain and simple. Once you buy a place toghter, get joint checking accounts, and share everything, shes your wife .... just makes it easier for me to kick her to the curb when I feel like it if its not legal on paper .....lol

What I have gathered from past threads it seems like the best bet in that price range is the Rondo basses or a squier vintage mod jazz bass (dont let the squier brand scare you, it should be really great!)

Get A VM over any of the Rondo stuff, the new black VM Jazz bass is amazing - they play better than any mexican fender I've ever seen (and that's alot, considering I ran a bass department in one of Europe's biggest guitar stores).

Find a used 90s Fernandes lawsuit jazz bass. I got mine for $175 near-mint. They used to be Fender Japan, and Fender had to sue them to stop making jazz basses as Fernandes. Absolutely crushing tone - it plays and sounds as good or better than any USA Fender jazz that I've tried.
