I might buy one to take to client meetings to display my wedding portfolio. As a photog it'd be useful to me.

So this is really only good for web surfers then?

I was thinking it would be good for art, but if you can't load real programs on it like corel or photoshop, then what's the point?

25h is pretty nice battery life IMO though.

It's a big iPod touch. It competes with Kindle, and Netbooks, two categories that Apple has been wanting to enter in some diagonal manner. I think it will (ironically) go on to become the biggest hit as a portable game system.

The thing that bums me out (as a developer) is the lack of open external connectivity. It could be an amazing device for live music, if it had one USB or FireWire port on it. Fuckers!

It also appears to have a forced psuedo single-tasking limitation to it, just like the iPhone (even though it's technically running BSD Unix!!) It's a dumbed down device, and the "Apple" branded CPU is a sign that they went for a lowest-bidder option.

Agreed - they've got an adapter to allow a USB port to be plugged into the standard iPod dock slot, but it's (as of now) just for uploading pictures from a camera.

I'm pretty sure the USB adapter will at least eventually let you do a bunch of stuff with it. There's no Firewire port for obvious reasons.

Relatively to the areas it is supposed to cover or relatively to competing portable gaming devices?

    Either way, I don't think so. ;)

This is a repeat of the iphone launch. All this ridiculous hype and yet the product itself lacks important features and functionality present in all its competitors (and usually for a lower price point).

Though I'm sure they can count on enough smug hipsters and uninformed youth demographic types to keep it afloat until they give everybody that bought one for purposes it cannot facilitate the stiff one-eye by releasing an actual tablet Mac in a year or two.

I must be getting old, I used to see the consumer electronics industry as a crucible for clever technology and fresh ideas. Now it's all about the pointless, overpriced gadget du jour (tablets and 3D TVs this year) and sticking a clock in a radio (so to speak) and calling it revolutionary design. Though it's probably been that way all along and I just wasn't astute enough to notice.

Both, in terms of hard dollars earned. And I would put money on that.

I really don't think so. How is this going to outperform the iPhone or the Nintendo and Sony handhelds as a portable gaming platform?

It's too big to compete with their portability and too expensive for casual gamers, even though one of it's biggest markets will be the casual games that are being developed for the iPhone.

Yeah, the app store makes exponentially increasing revenue, but I really can't see how this tablet would even outperform the in-house platforms, especially the iPhone.

Fuck burning churches, lets burn down schools and
I see the point of this machine as being that its intended for people who want to do internets, check mail and listen to music, but don't want a computer.

people who want to play games, but don't want a console.

and i think in that regard it will be a success, in that for many, many people it will make it easy to play cool videogames and talk to mates on facebook without the relentless misery and shittyness of owning a "real" computer.

thats a colossal market right there.
fuck it, it may be a glorified ipod, but if i had $500 in my hand and wanted a handy little gadget for browsing internet on the toilet, watching videos and all sorts of general capers, this would be it.

    and fuck netbooks. :headbang:

It's quite possible that it'll be a success just alone due to the hype carrying it. Which took a little nosedive today because the general consensus seems to be of a little disappointment. But many of the points of criticism already applied 1:1 to the iPhone and yet all it's instalments proved to be übersuccessful because Apple just successfully (and often unconsciously) convinces their customers of an added value to their products which exceeds technical aspects into a socio-cultural phenomenon.

So it's quite likely to not end up like the "Newton" or the "PowerMac G4 Cube".

However, I just don't think it sports the innovative and contextual character to rise to be the "biggest hit as a portable game system", as Shane oracles.

Tablets may not exactly be fresh, but you have to give them 'clever' - it also seems like people are expecting tech shows to be about fancy, pointless gadgets, as even good ideas turn into bullshit with a large enough crowd.

As for 'getting old'... I'm not quite sure your memory is working right, because old tech shows were also about gimmicks and we only remember the good ideas.

Yeah but those gimmicky things knew their place, they weren't arrogantly overestimating the market like they are with 3DTV for example. Thousands of dollars of outlay, significant step down in picture quality from HD, and brain detonating headaches. Gotta' have it!

Gimmicky? You've been presented with several great applications, and it's pretty clear that you don't get just how great they are in those applications. I'm with you on 3DTV sucking, but either explain what you have against tablets (and why you can't base it on reality) or get a better idea of what's going on with them.

personally i would have loved the tablet if they had built it around the snow leopard os but the fact that they choose to use the iphone/touch os is really limiting stuff. example take a look at the apple tv, its os was very basically built on 10.4 or 5 which allowed it was hackable to run osx 10.5. the tablet though is a completely different area. this is where its going to fail imho because if they were able to build the entire os off of snow leopard hacking it to do other shit would have been more interesting. but the only new hacks i can see coming for the ipad will be jailbreakes etc.. lame little useless buggy apps (great on an iphone... on a tablet.. meh)
