    Voices in the Fan
Words and music by Devin Townsend © 1997 HevyDevy Records

    Who's the weakest now?
    Caught up in the wire
    I'm already gone
    Who's the weakest now?

    It's the grey days that
    I'll remember the most
It's the grey times in the water
    Before morning

    I won't be alone
    Think of me at night
    Send my love to home
    I'll be alright

    It's the grey days that
    I'll remember the most
It's the grey times in the water
    Before morning

    And it's only tonight that
    I'll be able to leave
    And it's only the weak
That cry for me in morning

Because tonight there will be no sleep
    Tonight it comes for me
    Please, help them understand
I've become the voices in the fan

    Goodbye

From MDB I'd recommend Two Winters Only. Cry of Mankind could fit as well.

Also, I think Sand and Mercury by the Gathering is very sad.

Later stuff by Raison D'etre, the albums In Sadness... and The Empty Hollow Unfolds.
Penitent stuff is good, I have only heard the album Melancholia, Det Sorte Tjern is epic.
Luminous (off mp3.com) have a track called The Sea, atmospheric and sad in a way.
This Mortal Coil track Ivy and Neet would be great for the situation, as is most of their music.
Desiderii Marginis' dark ambient/industrial music can be saddening.

Dream Theater - Space Dye Vest
Hagalaz Runedance - Your World In My Eyes
    Cruachan - Susie Moran
    Burzum - Tomhet
Empyrium - The Ensemble Of Silence
    Psychotic Waltz - My Grave
    Anathema - Lost Control
King Crimson or In The Woods - Epitaph

Black Heart... check out the rest of their first album... It is awesome.

Harlequin is almost as beautiful as Flowers... but in a different way.
