    Help Save Internet Radio!

Earlier this month the US Copyright Office released their new set of rates for royalty payments by Internet webcasters. As you may have heard, these rates are insanely high by any measure.

Below are a couple of blogs that do a great job of explaining the current situation facing Internet radio:

If you want to get invovled, below are links to write your US Congressmembers as well as a link to an online petition:

Here is some additional information on this topic that I was given the ok to post :)

On April 16, 2007, the Copyright Royalty Board denied a petition for a rehearing on the new fees the RIAA are trying to institute against internet radio broadcasters in the United States.

The next recourse for internet broadcasters is for Congress to intercede on our behalf. To do this your congress representatives need to be contacted by any one who has a stake in internet radio or net radio will be silenced. Those who have a stake include the internet radio stations, anyone who listens to internet radio, the musicians who get heard on net radio, the labels who sell cds based on bands being heard on net radio. In this day and age, that pretty much equals the majority of people.

If you do not know who your state represetatives are:

Musicians encourage your record labels to support internet radio. The loss of internet radio will impact CD sales whether on a major or indie label. The majority of small, independent internet radio stations will be forced to close their doors for good. Those stations remaining will be the big corporate-run stations that play the same music that can be found by turning on your FM radio station. Tell your fans & supporters to contact their representatives.

NOW is the time to take action. If Congress doesn't step in the world will lose a huge outlet for hearing music of any genre by May 15, 2007.

Have great news! This means we start pushing harder.

On Tuesday, April 24 a bill entitled "Internet Radio Equality Act" will be

introduced into the House of Representatives. It is expected to meet the

    following royalty-setting criteria:

    A) Nullify the Copyright Royalty Judges' ruling for new rates and terms.

    B) Propose realistic rates and terms for all classes of Webcasters:

    1) Per Performance - Approximately one-quarter of the current rate.

    2) Percentage of Revenue (Option) - At 7.5% of service revenue.

    C) Change the method for determining rates and terms going forward.

Simultaneous to this legislation will be a new Action Alert posted on the

SaveNetRadio homepage urging all broadcasters and listeners to call their

Representative to co-sponsor this new bill.

Please write and call your representative and ask them to co-sponsor bill number H.R. 2060

It takes 260 sponsors to get it to bypass committee and to the House floor for an immediate vote.
