Is there any limitations to the darkness in Opeth? Should there be more or less darkness? I am curious what people think about jokes in the songs too... like the out of tune acoustic joke on Watershed? Should there be more or less of these jokes and the backwards messages? Also what do people think about psychadelics in the music, should there be more or less of this aspect?

Yeah darker yes, but as Don Corleone said, no sadder to the point where it depress you lol !
And about jokes and backward messages, not in every album/song , for me it's like someone who said a joke and everyone laughed so he/she kept saying it over and over again..

wtf, I dont think getting darker would help Opeth in any way. Either it would end up being satanic bullshit or childish wannabe bands.

This is how dark Opeth should be.

I actually wish they made more stuff like Burden, BUT longer and with Death Metal style vocals intermingled... Morbid Angel meet Deep Purple, kinda...

I think they are sufficiently dark  but they shouldn't go over board on the psychedelics or quirks that was in watershed. Knowing Opeth they won't because they are a versatile band who shift and mold into something a bit different with every album.

Mikael should do EXACTLY whatever he wants to do with Opeth, and not care for criticism. That's the way I like them the most.
I want them to colaborate with dave Grohl and make a comedian-acoustic-metal-live-set. dark and sad? no.

Opeth should be so dark and grim that light cannot escape it. Like a black hole.

i think the two adjectives "sad" and "dark" mean entirely different tones. opeth's "in my time of need" is sad, but not dark. ulver's "perdition city" is dark as hell, but not sad at all. i dont exactly know how to describe it.

"dark" doesnt have to be "satantic" either, or on minor chords. nick drake's music is mostly composed on major chords but it's dark too.

Opeth should be as dark as #000000. But if you ask, well, I don't give a fuck. They should make soul music.

Honestly, after Watershed and The Fathomless Mastery, there's a good chance I'd be happier if Mike ran off to Bloodbath.
