    a new thread, indeed.

actually i wanted to compile a cd consisting only of instrumental songs for my car, since i dig them quite a lot. but i found it quite hard to come across a dozen or so interesting metal instrumentals (actual songs, not just filling tunes) in my library which i could use. some recommendations would be highly appreciated.
also, what's your stance on instrumentals? waste of time? makes you want to push >>? or otherwise, what do you like about them?

Apart from the DT stuff you already know of, i'd recommend Sentenced's "Mourn".

I don't think they're a waste of time, but i think you have to be in the right mood to listen to them. Instrumentals have the advantage of letting you concentrate on the instruments (hah) rather than the voice. And they can convey a lot of feelings like that. The lack of lyrics leaves space for a lot more interpretations of moods and visions in your mind.

I agree with Siren. Also, sometimes it's good just to listen to a good violin or cello or piano or even guitar (yes, i like Ex nihilo).

You might try Lacuna Coil's Un fantasma tra noi (a ghost between us). It's a rather good instrumental, i think, with synth and all. Better options include most stuff by Apocalyptica (depending in your mood, you might like Epilogue (relief and Conclusion (depressive), Drive (moved stuff), or Faraway and Hope (simply beautiful)). Other (not really metal) songs you might enjoy are My immortal (instrumental) by Evanescence and Mellon Collie and the infinite silence by the Smashing Pumpkins. And i suppose you already know about In Flames's Man made God.

    - Undo (who feels like listening to some of the instrumentals he just mentioned)

I made a compilation many years ago so some of the songs are quite old. The groups I'd have to recall, and the Satriani songs I forgot the titles.....and yeah definately I would add Ex Nihilo to it now.

My tape was called The Instrametal.

    Dee
    Ides Of March
    Arc-Lite
    Ultra-Violence
    Pulse
    Vacant Stream
    Orion
    Satriani
    Viento Borrascoso

    Inquisition Symphony
    Losfer words
    Stratofortress
    Three Minute Warning
    Villa Strangiato
    Samba Pa Ti
    Satriani

I don't know what you consider "filling tunes", in my opinion all of these are actual songs. I believe it's no use to mention DT's or In Flames' instrumentals anymore right? All of these are by metal/rock bands to keep the list shorter. You might know a lot of these already:

Moonsorrow - Tuulen Koti, Aaltojen Koti (awesome)
    Norther - Frozen Sky (awesome)
    Norther - Beneath
    Norther - The Last Night
    Metallica - Orion
At The Gates - Into The Dead Sky
At The Gates - The Flames Of The End
    Dimmu Borgir - Sorgens Kammer
Dimmu Borgir - Perfection Or Vanity (awesome)
Dimmu Borgir - Fear And Wonder
    Iced Earth - 1776
    Abstract - Fragmenthea (album)
Sentenced - The Golden Stream Of Lapland
    Sentenced - Kaamos (awesome)
    Sentenced - Mourn (awesome)
    Mors Principium Est - Oblivion
Mors Principium Est - The Glass Womb (awesome)
    Amorphis - Relief
Sirenia - Seven Sirens And A Silver Tear (awesome)
Kataxu - In Arms Of The Astral World
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines: IV. Ruins (awesome)
    Nightrage - Solus
    Moonspell - Sons Of Earth
    Moonspell - Proliferation (awesome)
    Moonspell - Mare Nostrum

Yes and I like instrumentals very much too.

I would have mentioned Sirenia's Seven sirens, but i don't think it's that good. More like a filler tune (or, rather, a horribly failed attempt at ending An elixir as well as they ended At sixes).

Don't think so, isn't it "The Ides Of March" or "Transylvania" you're referring to?

    Anyway, essential instrumentals:

    - EUCHARIST - The Eucharist (doubtlessly one of the best instrumentals in (Swedish) Metal)

    - IN FLAMES - Timeless
    - DAYLIGHT DIES - Dismantling Devotion
    - DETONATION - Lost Euphoria pt. II & III

I think Katatonia - Inside the City of Glass is a great one. Also the one from Dan Swanö's Moontower... Encounterparts? I forget. And When Day Descends.

Instrumental metal and not one mention of Apocalyptica?

Songs such as 'Somewhere Around Nothing', 'Drive' and 'Heat' are pretty good instrumentals with a strong metal feel.

You could also try Mago De Oz's 'El Callejon Del Infierno', but good luck finding it, seems outside of Spain it's quite fdifficult to get hold of some of Mago De Oz's stuff. Very good metal instrumental though, lots of twin guitar melodies and good drumming.

Lumsk's 'Langt Nord i Trollebotten' is also good, Scandinavian folk basis with guitars, drums and violins, very mood setting.

Oh and if you can bear Samael still, try the new 'Era One' project, which is pretty much all metal instrumentals with the exception of a few songs on the first CD.
