    sweords such as the early Claymores were pretty much specialised weapons designed to cut right through people in a single blow or to break up pikemen formations by smashing their weapons and scattering them to be picked off by more mobile troops
    they were second line weapons meant to prevent charges, especially since they could cut through a horse & rider in a single blow, and those who fought with them were highly trained and usually defended by others, mainly pikemen or the like

    every country had a version of them and some were highly sought after as mercenaries in Europe, such as the Swiss Zweihänder

    Japan has the the Nodachi & the Odachi (literally "The Great/Big Sword", which is pretty much the name for all the big swords in one form or another) which were both for display and for use against mounted troops and pikemen

    Then there is the Naginata

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYKnAi-JXtk&feature=fvw"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYKnAi-JXtk&feature=fvw[/ame]

    The naginata has become associated in modern Japan as a woman's weapon as it is studied by women more than men; whereas in Europe and Australia Naginata is practiced predominantly by men

    This will blow your mind. For best results, put in the street address of somewhere you have/had a strong connection to, like your childhood home. It worked ok in firefox. PS: It takes forever to load and render maybe 5-7 minutes on a decent machine with 12Mb internet connection.

    Edit: a colleague ran it on Chrome and it didn't take anywhere near as long...
