I 'volunteer' my time in music promotions but after tomorrow, I'll be working in music management... band management to be precise.
Lets see my day job is with a Fortune 500 company, it pays the bills right now, but I am also involved as one of the co-directors of TEXAS MADFEST, and this is my second year as a sponsor for PP. When I retire this year i will be doing full time promotions and productions, and also still helping NIGHTMARE records. see this thread http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/progpower-usa/258824-there-should-prog-power-texas.html
I work for a Fortune 500 company too, but it's as exciting as watching grass grow. My dream is to work in the music industry full-time someday.
It was a dream at one time but now I work for a real estate company and one night a month at a Rock Club.
I don't work in the music business, but I hope to some day. I do a lot of volunteer type stuff, though. I help run a local music venue, set up bands/host the weekly live bands that we play on my college radio station, and I'm an in-training DJ at the same station.
Software Engineer by day, crazed prog metal guitarist by night! Back in the late 80s, I worked in a few different record stores and a music distributor.

I used to play classical music (piano) and perform in a youth orchestra (violin). That's the limit of it.
