Five grown men dress as female anime characters and play shreddy symphonic metal.

And I thought Lordi was weird.

All kidding aside, some of these visual kei bands are pretty decent. Versailles in particular are solid musicians.

The off-shoot band from this, Jupiter, is also killer. Yes, they dress up too, but the music speaks for itself. Just released a new album not too long ago.

Amazing how much (metal related) I don't know.

    Don it's a guy apparently: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hizaki

I can't watch that video - I felt a tingle. (Great sounding band)

And thus, the irony drips from the thread title.

One of these visual kei bands is responsible for one of the greatest power metal songs of all time.

Incidentally, they are the biggest rock/metal band to have ever come out of Japan and are extremely underrated over here. Do yourselves a favor and watch this video. The epic of all epics. :)

I'm amazed that some of these board vets haven't heard of Versailles, given there have been a few threads on this board about them, and other Visual Kei bands. Granted, it probably has been a couple of years since they were last mentioned. (Partially because they aren't together anymore, as far as I know.)

Irony? C'mon! Give me a little more credit than that. The pun was intentional. :-D
