Hi All, I'm looking for some new mellodic or symphonic Black Metal bands to check out. Possibly also some Black/Folk bands. I haven't listened to a great deal of black metal so i'm looking for a solid starting point. I would prefer bands / albums with good production. Currently loving the following; Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk & IX Equilibrium Old Man's Child - Vermin Stormlord - Mare Nostrum Catamenia - Eskhata, Chaos Born, Location: Cold Cheers, Av.
Not symphonic but Spite Extreme Wing are definitely one of the best black metal bands ever. Kinda similar to Dissection in places.
Anorexia Nervosa - Drudenhaus Bishop of Hexen - The Nightmarish Compositions Crionics - Armageddon's Evolution Dimmu Borgir - Spiritual Black Dimensions Kataxu - Hunger of Elements Limbonic Art - In Abhorrence Dementia Nokturnal Mortum - To the Gates of Blasphemous Fire Obsidian Gate - Colossal Christhunt
Dark Fortress - Séance Dark Fortress - Eidolon Naglfar - Sheol Naglfar - Pariah Naglfar - Harvest Keep of Kalessin - Armada Cryptic Wintermoon - The Age of Cataclysm But get Spite Extreme Wing's 3 full albums first. :0
Naglfar's first two are far superior in terms of melodic Black Metal. Same goes for Keep of Kalessin.
Tvangeste- Firestorm Ancient Rites- Dim Carcosa Borknagar (any album) Check out Moonsorrow if you want symphonic folk metal. And Zeph nailed it with Bishop of Hexen; great symphonic black metal.
I'll reassert my recommendation of Nokturnal Mortum's To the Gates of Blasphemous Fire, as it is Symphonc Folk Black Metal very similar to Anthems...
I agree with Naglfar but not KoK. The guy said he wanted good production though, Pariah and Harvest are way better in this department than the earlier albums.
And what does he mean by good production? The first two albums by either band are by no means of bad production, and coincidentally they contain better music.
I second Einherjar's Tvangeste suggestion. You might wanna try some Alghazanth as well. Martyrium Maybe some Obscurcis Romancia Omniscient Vesperian Sorrow
Thanks for the rec's - had a listen to most of these - stand outs so far; Naglfar, Graveworm, Keep of Kalessin, Cryptic Wintermoon, Limbonic Art, Borknagar & Dark Fortress. Going to try and order a few cds this weekend.
Sacramentum - Far away from the Sun. Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells, Autumn Aurora. Windir - Artnor, 1184. Ulver - Bergtatt, Nattens Madrigal (mostly their early stuff). Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia In the woods - Heart of the Ages Sworn - The Alleviation
what in the hell did those raw old skool BM masterpieces transform unrecognizably into well-produced modern melodic-BM albums while I wasn't lookin'?!!!
Well, not exactly well-produced modern BM, but i do find it more melodic than most other old skool stuff. The thread starter might like it anyways
One band I forgot to mention before, Thyestean Feast. Kinda like Windir/Cor Scorpii but, imo, better.
