Yay, finally I get to create a thread! And its gonna be a long one so watch out.. The thing is: In a couple of weeks my father celebrates a far to high birthday and thus takes another step towards the grave and while that is tragic enough it also puts me into the position of thinking of a present. Now, since I'll be leaving Germany to study in the nice flat Netherlands money is not abundant and so I'm forced to do soemthing creative. Which is cool cos it distracts me from doing something useful, like learning more dutch. Anyway, the point is I'll make a "metal through the ages " compilation. Since its a present he'll be forced to listen to it all and I'm happy for the opportunity to win him for metal's glory or scar him for the rest of his life. So I'll design a nice dvd packaging even though I'm no graphics designer but shit, I figured out how to make newspaper articles with in Design, I'll manage DVD booklets. Most importantly however I'll need songs. Thats were your help comes in. Of course I can't cover all metal with 2-3 audio CDs but I'll certainly try to be comprehensive.. and so i turn to this board and its mighty metal wiseguys and gals. So far.. seventies.. in the beginning tehre was Sabbath.. Iron Man - Black Sabbath Children of The Grave - Black Sabbath Tyrant - Judas riest (Overkill - Motorhead) the nwobhm arrives.. the eighties begin Wrathchild - iron Maiden Number of The Beast and/or 2 Minutes to midnight - iron Maiden Hit and Run - Girlschool something from Angel Witch or Saxon? the eighties.. thrash and hair Bloodlust - Venom Angel of Death/Raining Blood - Slayer Whiplash - Metallica Schizophrenia - Sepultura Pleasure To Kill - Kreator ??? - Motley Crue Eruption - van Halen something from Poison? NITRO? Def Leppard? first death... then black... Zombie Ritual - Death Immortal Rites - Morbid Angel Mephistopheles - Deicide heartwork - carcass something from dismember? something from hellhammer seven churches - possessed bathory - under the black mark deathcrush - mayhem inno a satane - emperor the ninties three Gs and one M Grind: napalm death - scum (though thats still eighties. damn^^) Groove: something from pantera Grunge: either soundgarden or nirvana melodeath: undecided, too many to chose the nu overtakes groove.. something from koRn papa roach? papercut - linkin park closing remarks the bards song (in the forrest= - blind guardian honorable mentions to all the gothic, power, industrial, doom and similar bands that didn#t fit in.. Now, what really imporant things did I miss out? Suggestions and all are very welcome..
From Judas Priest I would choose "Breaking the Law". Number of the Beast yes, other Maiden track Aces High or The Trooper (!!). Girlschool is not that notable oder..? Motley Crue: Dr Feelgood. Entombed "Left Hand Path" can't miss out. And Bathory/Possessed/Hellhammer should be chronologically before Morbid Angel/Deicide/Death etc. Add a Darkthrone or Immortal track to the Black Metal bit. Pantera - Cowboys From Hell or Walk. Grunge, don't forget Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, but then "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Black Hooe Sun" will suffice for grunge, perhaps add "Alive" (Pearl Jam). Actually Alive is a must really KoRn: Blind and some Slipknot..? Eyeless and/or [sic] are my suggestions. There ya go.
@MadTinus Thanks! *takes notes* I chose girlschool because its ne of the few all-girl bands. variety. @griev0r I first included that but I thought Zombie Ritual was a cooler song. Maybe I'll toss a coin.
70s: Stuff from Sabbath(preferably s/t song ), Pentagram(Early Demos), Priest(Stained Class), The Hand Of Doom(please do check out).... NWOBHM: Tygers Of Pan Tang(First album, I recommend Killers and Money), Satan - Court In The Act(Broken Treaties and Trial By Fire must be heard), Jaguar - Power Games(No Lies and Dutch Connection, First two Iron Maiden albums, Blitzkrieg.... Thrash: Definitely first Slayer releases, Exodus - Bonded By Blood, Kreator - Endless Pain, Sodom - First lp and ep, Poison - demos and rehearsals (not the glam fag band). Metallica is not thrash...put that under speed metal, unless it's not too important...I'd include Living Death for speed too. Death Metal: Possessed, Necrovore, Incubus(demo), Death(Demos and scream bloody gore), Master, Morbid Angel, Nihilist... Grind: Repulsion, Napalm, Carcass... please skip groove, nu metal, glam, and that other crap...but I got carried away and maybe you can use some of the stuff I mentioned.
thats cool, you definatly need Iron Man - Black Sabbath or 2 Minutes to midnight - iron Maiden photograph - Def Leppard definatly the bards song and raining blood uhhh for whom the bell tolls, metallica hook in mouth - megadeth enter sandman - metallica (only cause it gets some people into metal....and its a start at least right?)
90's death/doom: Katatonia - Brave Murder Day, Amorphis - Tales from a thousand lakes Dark Tranquility - Gallery Anathema - Silent Enigma InFlames - The Jester Race In The Woods - Heart of the Ages Saturnus - Paradise Belongs to You
So.. I made it and gave it to him. Response was as expected. From Sabbath to Motorhead was well received but most death/thrash wasn't - except the bass lines in Scream Bloody Gore. Well, I tried, and now he likes Maiden. That counts for something. Edit: By lisra
nice work on the cover ;D pretty funny that u chose a kata picture when there's no kata song on the cd's ;]
Well they don't exactly fit in anywhere except into Death/Doom (which I left out) and awesome, which isn't exactly a genre. Also, there was so much Katatonia played when I still lived at home so chances are that my old dad knows how they sound
Under NU metal I would have to add first. The best of Nu- Metal. (according to me) Faith No More- Epic Rage Against The Machine - Bombtrack Korn - Whatever song that have already been mentioned. System Of A Down - Chop Suey then, Linkin Park etc..
Yeah, there's so much missing.. I would have loved to add more Anthrax, some Death/Doom, a bit of Prog and Power.. but then there would have been like 4 Cds and I had a time limit.
Lost in the Proto-Metal haze along with Deep Purple. But anyway LZ wouldn't be necessary cos me old man has LPs by them.
why not opeth? your cds are so a good gift to him if i were your father i'll probably be so proud of a son like you!
