I had long hair & now i have short hair.. I don't believe that my hair cut changed my perceptions or way of life... (except that bi-monthly hair wash :D). But, what can be expected is a little less acceptance from some people due to my age now. I think that in a way, long hair is r3sp3ct in the metal community with alot of people.

No. Long hair does not a metalhead make.

I think it is more satisfying to headbang with long hair (or in my case, with my hair down as opposed to having it tied back), but why would you need to have a particular image to be a metalhead? Here was me thinking most metalheads had the attitude that they could do whatever the fuck they want to, without following trends. If people start saying 'you don't have long hair so you can't be metal' it's just forcing people to follow a different trend to fit in. *shrug*

    And it really worked!

Maybe Manowar should try that tactic.

See what really confuses me is are we talking about people who listen to and like metal or "METALHEADS" whom to me means they live for the music and project the image/lifestyle of someone who is a METALHEAD.If you defend the title METALHEAD then we better define it as it sounds like an extreme description of ones musical taste?
I'd say you can sit at home and listen to all the punk music you like but if you walk around in public looking the same as everyone else how does that make you a punk? The guys who hang around Newtown with their mohawks, piercings, crusty clothes, exploited patches on leather jackets etc etc look like punks to me. Same with Metalheads. If you have long hair, wear black band t-shirts, jeans etc etc you look like a METALHEAD.
If i walked up to a bunch of homeboys looking like i do and said i'm a homie too cause i listen to heaps of PUBLIC ENEMY at home, you think they'd agree?
Weather you like it or not image is a big part of EVERY scene.
Most people on here who are saying it doesn't matter about the hair probably also get upset when someone who is not a METALHEAD has a go about them for only liking the devils music. Then you'd all scream i listen to lots of different stuff like Jazz, Blues, TORI AMOS, Classical etc etc which then means are you a metalhead or just want a piece of every pie? If you want to be a music fan that's fine, i don't care if your standing next to me at a METAL gig with a fucking suit on, have fun and enjoy it.good on you.
But if your walking down the street with long hair and metal clothes on i could spot you in a crowd and say "hey there's a METALHEAD!"
so once again i ask what is a METALHEAD? If SHANNON NOLL has "Master Of Puppets" in his cd collection is he a METALHEAD but also likes different types of music and doesn't need to dress like one?
Common' people, MANOWAR would be ashamed!
p.s. Refering to the pic above, It's no coincidence that BRUCE DICKINSON cut his hair off when he admitted that he wanted to do different styles of music, and also when it was uncool to like metal in the 90's. Just like METALLICA he is a bad example.

I have long hair simply for the reason that if it was meant to be short, it wouldn't grow..

    Right?

    No...of course not.
I had long hair for 20+ years and got the shits with it interfering with work and also the heat etc, so I shaved it off. I always said, if I didn't have long hair it would be shaved because I I'm just not a haircut kinda guy.
Anyway, 10 years of regret led to me trying to regrow the crop.
I'm kind of at the beatnick stage now. And yes headbanging doesn't feel the same without hair. And the windmill is impossible.

Long hair is fuckin COOL!! Just not essential.

Well, long hair just looks much better when you're going for the metal image. Especially if you're in a band and want to do windmills or nice headbangs, or even at shows. Headbanging with short hair just looks stupid!

Growing out your hair also proves that you've been into the music for quite some time, and are willing to look that way no matter what.

So yeah, it's not essential, but perfects the image.
