well, it's all underground. and there are some quality underground metal bands out here in Los Angeles (Gatekeeper, Noctuary, Winterthrall...) at my school (CSULB) there's a lot of metalheads. I hear guys blasting melo-death as they drive by in their trucks and shit. I saw a guy wearing a venom shirt one time too. that was pretty cool
i barely see someone with a metal shirt unless im at an amusement park. i was at six flags magic mountain a couple days ago and soooo many people were wearing metal shirts. but what really hurts is the metal scene is the respect its lacking because of people pre judging
That sucks. But at least you still have the Milwaukee Metalfest. (Do you?) The Maine metal scene is oversaturated with New England hardcore/metalcore. Some of that shit's alright, but they all sound the same. We have some pretty damn good metal bands up here though, like the ones that opened for Skinless in Bucksport this past Saturday: Illicit Empire's pretty damn good. Sounds more like Bay-Area thrash than NYHC. Last Chance to Reason is amazing, as well. Think a cross between Meshuggah, Unearth, Dream Theater, and Crisis. Apart from that, Maine's metal scene is pretty stale, but it is improving.
we have like 3 clubs where i live that have metal bands every month. 3 grand buildings filled with rehearsal rooms (60-70% of the bands here is hardrock/metal). i think 3-4 of the people that I know is NOT musicians. the parks are filled with long haired, beer drinking youth _every day_. and how many live in this town..? around 70'000 people or something.
Milwaukee Metalfest has been going downhill more and more every year. Jack Koshik is a arrogant bastard who's ripped off so many bands there's barely a metalfest left. I haven't gone to the past couple. I started going when I was 13 years old. It used to be the shit now it is shit.
I hate metalheads. I think they are the third-worst people in the world. Yes I'm biased, but who isn't?
if you're talking about outside opinions of the metal scene being negative, then I agree with you definitely. I don't wear my metal shirts too often except if I'm going to a show or if I'm in the mood. I usually wear just a plain t shirt and jeans. So when people find out what I listen to, they're a bit surprised at first. Everytime I see a kid in a Slayer shirt and a Slipknot shirt I think to myself, "Should I show them better bands? Should I tell them that they don't have to dress metal to be metal." and then I run my car into a tree and pray for a quick and instant death
in my town there IS NO SCENE...really..nothing.. so for my metal fix i go to San Francisco since its not too far away... theres the Pound that has decent shows all the time but the place is ghetto as all fuck out!
I know ONE (!!!) in Holland, in Arnhem, hehe but the music still sucks, it's all the 'slayer-type-of-thing'... so it sucks IMO
We have a few places (maximum of 2) that play metal... they even have metal karaoke every week... but I don't usually go to these places because they are expensive, the music is wierd and the people there are jerks... We also have avtonomic part of Ljubljana called metelkova mesto, a lot of metalheads hang out there. Sometimes it's ok but usually the place is filled with 12 year-olds who are desperate to smoke weed somewhere where the cops won't find them... oh and sometimes skins and punks come and destroy everithing they can...
haha, I know about Metelkova what do we have? Iva might know better... recently one of my acquaintancies opened a metal ... pub, I went there once, picked 3 songs from the juke-box (Suicide Commando - something for my friend, Morgoth - Isolated, Candlemass - Solitude), had a beer and left. I don't mind the extremely young people (14-16) drinking alcohol (at all, lol) but I am too old for that kind of mingling. there is Mochvara club where all the alternative shit is played (many bands played there, last Imp. Nazarene worth mentioning), Tvornica, Boogaloo where CoB played... KSET where Sinister played... actually, there is no strictly metal space, except for that Rune pub.
The metal scsne in the States sucks donkey dick. get used to it.... this country will never have a great metal scene.
Are you kidding? In 90% of towns in the Netherlands there is a metal bar somewhere... I have been to MANY MANY cities in Holland believe me, and there was always a bar that plays rock/ metal and later in the night *REAL METAL* IMO, the metal scene in Europe is a lot better than the scene here.... You get European tours with 3-4 dates only in Holland (the country is smaller than the size of Long Island) and 6-7 dates in Germany alone.. .think about it. Here you barely get 1 date in NYC - NEW YORK FUCKING CITY - 11 million people! Its sad really. Its really a shame that a country who produces so many great metal bands, is lacking when it comes to a great scene. I personally blame the Walmart shoppers, Mcdonald's eaters, American Idol viewers and bible humpers.... in other words: 85% of the country
There are definately you group of elitist metalheads who think they know all when it comes to metal. But for the most part we're good people. I also think that too many people with the attitude of The American scene sucks and will always suck is what perpetuates this suckiness. What do you think needs to happen for things to change? Although I do agree that it is mostly the fault of popular society, but you should also try to help if that's what you're passionate about. It's sad that in this age of computers, people have become so lazy that they can't even get their asses away from the computer long enough to go see a show. I've never been to Europe, although seeing all those metalfests that go on I would love to go there, so I can't say anything in comparison. Just looking at the big picture and looking at the lack of good metalfest here makes this country seem so small. Also, I have friends from New York and I think the lack of shows definately has to do with the ultra conservative ,live by the pages of Vogue and GQ magazine majority. I definately think Jack Koshik is greatly responsible for the ruin of the metalscene here in Milwaukee, but I'm trying to help.
