Ive left kick5 behind these days, its character top end slap never fits in my mixes, but im gonna try kick 1 as you suggested. Kick 1a is more aggressive isnt it?
I don't like this mix in particular. However, I love the latest Gojira and the Divine Heresy one doesn't sound any bad either.
Really ? How old are you btw ? Back in the late 90's it was hard to miss that dreadlocked guitar player playing in that Oakland band that was one of the "hottest" metal bands at that time ... About that Devildriver song, the music does nothing to me (DD never did it for me anyway), but i like this kick a lot. And the drums on "The way of all flesh" sound awesome.
I'm 22, but if you're referring to Machine Head, I never got into 'em tbh (not that I necessarily don't like 'em, I've actually never heard a single song by them that I know of, it's just that I'm not the biggest thrash fan, so I never bothered to check 'em out)
Kick1 sounds a LOT like Kick5 but WITHOUT that topend that is too much. Kick1a is nice too, I think it is more open sounding from what I recall. Just try Kick1 and put a steep HP at around 50hz, maybe cut some 130hz too, just play around. This kick is really easy to make it sit in a mix IMHO.
Yeah thats near enough the exact EQ'ing ive been doing. Blending kick 1 and 10 at the moment. Sounding pretty good! Can't wait for the new Slate metal kicks!! :hotjump:
Ok i didn't know you were younger than me... i guess people who were reading metal magazines like maniacs in the late 90's (like i was) could not "miss" the band and this guy Wow i've just realized i've been listening to metal for more than 15 years and i feel old already just kidding
+1 on that. And "the more things change" is badass too. I think those 2 albums totally shit on their two lastest "100% metal comeback" releases, but that's just me.
Still burn my eyes is 1000 times better "than the more things change" Burn my eyes was mean and fury!
Just wanna mention I fucking LOVE this kick sound, it has such a full attack; a wet "splat", rather than some annoying thin "click" (or even worse "tick", see Behemoth's "Demigod" :Smug: ) Song is really growing on me too!
+1 I think Logan's mixes are coming along nicely, though. The last thing I heard from him was the Cavalera Conspiracy CD, which to me the drums on that sound completely replaced and too robotic/not enough velocity differences. I love this mix for their new CD. Sounds like it has more in common with Andy's mix for TLKW than it does with Colin's work on Fury. Diggin' it.
I like it so far, but I also tend to agree with a review I just read of it where the reviewer likened it to eating at McDonald's all day long: I find I tend to agree with that opinion of most of Devildriver's releases - I enjoy it for the first few spins, but I tend to tire off it thereafter. But for now I'm liking it - at least after two full spins through the disc.
