The only good song on the entire album is A Jewel Traced Through Coal. Everything else seems so phoned in, it's awful.

    Pop metal =/= pop

But fine, to humor you, far be it from me to deny you your metal with horrible, melodramatic, overly theatrical keyboards, tastelessly mixed in with mindless downtuned chugga chugga bullshit, comboed with a vocalist that now sounds like a retarded witch.

    There, that about covers it.

Maybe so, but considering the vastly different styles between the two bands, and that Dimmu were a support act, I can't imagine they'd pick up too many fans from a largely Korn audience.

I know they're not the same. Why did you point that out? I didn't say pop metal is the same as pop.

The song "Gateways" definitely had some good promise and potential, nice orchestral and keyboard parts, although it did suffer from somewhat weak riffs and horrible cackling when the female vocalist first started up.

WTF @ the video for Gateways

Should probably go in the "what the fuck you lose" thread.

I don't know why Dimmu goes so over-the-top in their videos. This video probably isn't as bad as their last couple though. Galder still does his thing were he tilts his head to the side and makes funny faces at the camera.

I was just starting to warm up to the song Gateways. It's got some great moments in that song that make it worthwhile but sadly, the rest of the album is a major letdown. I don't think the orchestra nor the band's input is particularly that good and when mixed together, neither one seems to complement the other. I'll have to give it some more time but so far I'm very disappointed. I was hoping for something at least as good as Death Cult Armageddon, the last release from them that I can say I genuinely enjoyed. That was 7 years ago!

This is indeed interesting. I also do not think it's Vortex...but I will say this.... I thought she had a Vortex style and sound for a female vocalist from the get go, when I first heard Gateways.

It's too bad she's only on the one song. The other clean vocalist is terrible.

The "Gateways" song sounds much better on the CD than on that video that was posted here, in the video the riffs are way too tinny-sounding but on the CD they are fine. The female vocalist actually sounds quite good later on after the initial hideous cackling part. :kickass:

I like the new album, epic symphonic metal ...... quite similar to DCA in my opinion.

Seems to be mixed opinions here....oh well..I'm picking it up I guess. I can see how some poeple can't get into them though. I can also see where others find them to be a bit commercial and mainstream.

But keep in mind, and I'm not trying to change anyones mind here, when I'm listening to them admist non metal company, I feel uneasy with reactions I get...due to the gutteral vocals, high speed, volume and overall satanic stylings.

I guess what I'm saying is..to other people that really listen to mainstream music, pop music, country, or those that follow the ever lovin' American Idol...Dimmu Borgir are far from mainstream.

Dimmu Borgir isn't a mainstream band at all. People who actually believe this have a very limited scope of the music world and on reality. Sure Dimmu Borgir is undeniably one of the more commercial, accessible bands in extreme metal but to call them mainstream or pop is just idiotic. Being a well-known and popular band within the metal scene hardly means anything in the grand scheme of things.

How does anyone expect a band to make a living as metal musicians these days? By not promoting your band and not touring?

Does it really pay off being a misanthrope recording grim demos in your bathroom while working part time at McDonalds? :guh:
