Have you not heard The Longest Year? The chorus is amazing.
I got an email saying that my copy will arrive in my mailbox tomorrow! Im a happy retard!
Yes I have heard it and yes it is a good chorus. But when I compare it to the other Katatonia songs, it seems weak too. I mean nowhere near July, My Twin, In The White, Leaders and Deliberation. I gave these examples only from TGCD. There are more examples as we all know...
To say it sounds like a bad TGCD is beyond crazy. Its MUCH more diverse and apart from Forsaker no track sounds anything at all like a TGCD track
Ok I think you lot who don't get this need more time it's like all the best kat stiff and really before you get too into opinions you need more time I thought day and then the shade was boring at first then I got it and love it if you don't get katatonia by now go and buy some more good charlotte albums and leave the rest in peace
We'll just have to agree to disagree then cause imo The Longest Year's chorus is right up there. I think it's one of the bands best, I get chills every time I hear it.
It is not of course the same. But anyone can tell that they are very similar. Yeah the album is diverse for sure but that doesn't mean that it has to be good.
Ps it's an amazing album
Strong views give it time I think this is lfdgd of the viva period
If this one's for me, I have to tell you that I have been listening to Katatonia for like 8 years now and trust me I know the feelings when I first hear a Katatonia album. Yes it needs time of fukkin course and I will surely give this time. Most probably I will enjoy all of the songs. But I haven't had that feeling that it's the weakest chain of post-BMD when I first heard TGCD. That's what I'm talking about. You must get used to people that don't like what you like. Otherwise %98 of the world will have to go and buy Good Charlotte according to your perception...
You mention the pop songs on TGCD, and hence i believe you will stay disappointed with NITND if you believe thats what you "need it to be".
(I love those songs too, though - don't get me wrong.)
NITND does not have any of those types of songs exept for The longest year, witch is my least favourite, btw.
I just compared the choruses, I like the rest of the album too...
Sure. But it seems the lack of "big choruses" as you put it was something that you found hard to take.
For me I had a hard time getting into TGCD when it came out for your exact reason for not getting into NitND. But it grew on me gradually, maybe NitND will do the same thing for you
I have a feeling you'll like it Adam
I was actually listening to The Great Cold Distance today, and it struck me how much Jonas' lyrics have matured. I always thought his lyrics were great, but this time around he's really stepped it up.
The Great Cold Distance blew my mind when I first heard it. The more I listened to it the better it got. I expect this one will be the same.
Katatonia have always been the grower song kings
This is my fear as well. I listened to about 10 seconds of the ending of this song on a site and heard Linder's voice and was not impressed. Of course I will have to hear the full song to completely judge though. Does Jonas at least sing background vocals to Linder, or does Jonas just like walk out of the recording studio halfway through the song?
Departer is the only song I don't care for on the album, for the most part with Linder, doesn't fit at all to me. Idle Blood is probably my favorite so far, one of the most beautiful Katatonia songs ever. I'll probably give a better review later.
All I'll end with is...I'm satisfied, they once again delivered and have the album of the year, hands down.
It's a great album for sure, but I agree, departer is just about "ruined" for me because of the Linder vocals. They really don't sound as good as I feel it would have sounded with jonas, a little too breathy and not the same dark tonality. Plus the interlude to that song is a bit odd and simplistic. I love the song, but I can't help but feel a lot of wasted potential with it.
Everything else seems to be very well done, my only complaints would be that it seems to be an album almost solely of slow songs. A little bit of speed variety(day and then the shade type pace) would have been nice and longer songs! A few songs seem to build to something and then just kind of keep brooding on(inheritance), and that's ok since it works in that case, but it seems like EVERY song does this. There's no variation at the end of any song like they did on viva emptiness and a tiny bit on TGCD, where a new part emerges at the end of the song or a variation riff on the chorus plays or some such.(example being how they play one of the verse parts with heavy riffing at the end of "follower", i LOVE that).
I do however feel like I'm the only one who is partial to "New Night". Interesting song in my opinion.
