I hear its good. I'm not a huge Star Wars nerd. I liked the originals as a kid and never really gave EP 1-3 a chance......sooo out of the loop.
why would the shittiest movie of 2015 need it's thread
Why is it shitty?
Brilliant movie, well worth the money and I wasn't disappointed. Heaps better than the prequels, respecting the originals while still adding new (and working) elements and overall just fantastic. While naturally all of it wasn't amazing, most of it was (IMHO).
I give it a really strong B+; better than Return of the Jedi but still behind Empire and ANH, in that order. Some overly obvious callbacks, goofy dialogue in parts, and Starkiller Base was kind of silly, but in a fun way. I'm honestly shocked at how fleshed-out, memorable, and compelling the characters were- even Luke was kind of a stand-in for the hero with a thousand faces, but Rey and Finn have distinct personalities, and I fucking love what they did with Kylo Ren. I'm hoping the next one is a little slower-paced and has more dialogue explaining what's going on in the galaxy and whatnot.
Also super hyped for Rogue One next year. Not having to create a trilogy will really free them up to make an interesting, self-contained plot in the SW universe that's hopefully a little darker than the main movies, which is something I've wanted for a long time.
While he wasn't as strong of a character as Vader or Palpatine (nor should he, he should be something of his own), I think he will rise up to par if they keep on extending and building him. I really loved a certain thing done by the character involving his wound (trying not to spoil anything), it was a top notch detail!
IMHO a better movie than ANH (in many aspects), I really have high hopes for the next ones!
It's a "fun ride" but it's not a good movie. It's a complete rip off of ANH.
Everything doesn't need to be explained but this movie leaves too much unexplained.
I did laugh, it was exciting at times, but it was a bit too comical at times and that sucked me right out of the movie..
So The Empire is done for and we have The Republic? Ooookay.
So who are The New Order? And are they fighting The Republic? But then we have The Resistance.. ooookay?
Is The Resistance with The Republic? Is The New Order fightin The Republic? What are The Resistance resisting against?
Who funds The Resistance? Why are they fighting The New Order alone?
A new Deathstar.. but this time it's bigger.. it's inside a planet.. but it still gets blown up..
A bad-ass female shine Stormtrooper named Phasma gets a blaster pointed at her.. so this bad-ass turns off the planetary shield..
She doesn't resist.. she doesn't do anything.. just turns it off.. and we don't see her anymore..
And there is a time-limit for when the new Deathstar AKA Starkiller can fire again, like in New Hope.. maybe I missed something but the time-limit was 15 minutes.. and in that frame of time they managed to do all kinds of stuff.. I can't go to the bathroom in 15 minutes..
I swear, I sound super critical of stuff, but like I said it was a "fun ride" with some laughs.. but.. it feels rushed and doesn't really do it for me.. Is it better than the prequels? What I produced in my 20 minute bathroom visit is better than the prequels. The movie starts off good and there's a lot of old "Star War" feel to it, they definitely nailed that and some early interaction in the Finn & Poe bromance..
But they played it too safe so.. I dunno..
And there's a lot of Deus Ex Machina.. that's what I'm talking about as well when I say that there's a lot that isn't explained.
I really hope no one reads that post before watching the movie.
Well, a thread made to discuss a movie after the movie has been released.. meh.. I mentioned spoilers..
Haha agreed as clicking a link that features the title of a published movie you're going to see is always risky.
Anyways, looking forward to the next one!
For what it's worth, there is an official backstory describing galactic politics since the fall of the Empire in some new books and comics; that stuff is out there if you want to read it. I do wish they had at least summarized it in the opening crawl though.
As for mirroring ANH, part of that was deliberate and part of it is just common movie tropes. It's not as if the directors, screenwriters, and producers didn't understand what they were doing- they did lift certain elements from the original deliberately, and in other cases it's just coincidences (people bitching about the Ren scene on the catwalk are being dumb, what location would have been more dramatic?). I feel like it's a sort of "if you choose to let it bother you then it will" situation for me.
Yeah, the next director is Rian Johnson who also wrote the next screenplay. It doesn't look like he's done much and the only thing I've seen from him is Looper. I assume he can't fuck up that much..
If you haven't watched them, watch the Redletter Media reviews of the prequels by Mr Plinkett..
Shows what mistakes George Lucas did..
I'm happy he's not involved anymore.. he did bring us great movies, but it seems that a big part of that was the people working with him..
"A similar situation arose with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed’s protagonist, Starkiller. “[That name] was only supposed to be a nickname or call sign, not a proper name from the beginning,” a former LucasArts employee says. The development team hoped that Lucas would give Vader’s apprentice a Darth moniker, which at the time, was something that didn’t happen often.
“The team threw a Hail Mary to George, saying the game would have more credibility if the apprentice had a ‘Darth’ title,” a Force Unleashed team member says. Lucas agreed that this situation made sense for Sith royalty, and offered up two Darth titles for the team to choose from. “He threw out ‘Darth Icky’ and ‘Darth Insanius.’ There was a pregnant pause in the room after that. People waiting for George to say ‘just kidding,’ but it never comes, and he just moved on to another point.”"
New books? Because I know they scrapped the EU. So nothing of the old is canon anymore. :/
Knights of the Old Republic game has really good story..
Yeah, they knew what they were doing, but I felt it was playing too safe ..
I did like Kylo Ren and the catwalk scene was good..
I liked how he only managed to mimic the old ways, like his lightsaber is crude (if that's word) but he's inexperienced and throws temper tantrums..
Yeah, new books. Somebody posted a screencap on reddit but I can't find it.
tl;dr version is that the Empire and Rebel Alliance signed a peace treaty getting rid of the armed forces of both sides (with punitive measures for the Empire- it's just a thinly veiled metaphor for the Treaty of Versailles), and the Rebels re-established the Galactic Republic. But Leia maintained the military subset of the Alliance in secret (against the treaty) because she was afraid the Empire would try to attack again. The First Order was created on the pretext of countering that threat, which they criticized as an illegitimate guerrilla force operating outside the law (again, similar to ANH, basically a North vs. South Vietnam dynamic). They build Starkiller Base as a response and...well, we know what they did with it in the movie hahah.
