I think the worst part is that a large number of news reports I saw had prematurely begun saying they wouldn't have been surprised if it was Islamic activists who did this before the smoke had even cleared. Hardly one word about his religion when it was discovered he was Christian, except to put as much possible distance between him and the religious sect he belonged to.

    Wow.

Leave it to Glenn Beck to compare a bunch of dead teenagers to the Hitler Youth.

    +1

This bothered me very much too. This American bigoted notion that terrorism and Islam are synonymous with eachother should have been dispelled more because of this incident. It doesn't matter what family raises you -- anyone can radicalize their philosophy and become just as insane as this guy.

On another note, I have to LOL hard now that there are neo nazis who believe the whole thing was a doctored up conspiracy and that this guy was actually "anti-racist" and pro-israel.

I was very saddened when I heard this Friday night (spent Thursday and most of Friday secluded due to moronic air travel bullshit). I was lucky enough to not have to do the call out to all my friends, like with NYC, as they had all posted on FB by the time I looked at a computer.

The thing that disturbs me the most, is that this guy is convinced that this attack "had to happen". Violence is always a last resort, it should never be the first and he had more than ample opportunity to seek political solutions. Attacking a camp with kids and teens is never an option, that makes him no better than the "muslim extremist groups" he was seeking to exclude from his country.*

*I recognize that he was looking to keep more immigrants from the ME out of Norway, but given the recent killings of youth in Syria and Afghanistan, he's on par, IMO.

I saw that, and yes, yes he is. I knew it wouldn't take him long.

Is it true that the maximum sentence this dude can get is 22 years?? I read that he can have it repeated, but that just doesn't sound right.. is that 22 years for each person he killed?

No, 21 years is the maximum penalty possible in Norway. It's very different from the States. They have also been thinking about charging him for crimes against humanity, which is a new law that nobody in Norway has been convicted for yet, and which would give him 30 years. After that, they can decide that he is too dangerous to let out and keep him in forvaring for five year periods indefinitely.

tl;dr: No, he won't necessarily ever get out of prison, and I personally doubt he will.

Well, at least there's that. I'm guessing Norway doesn't have a death penalty. How is your prison system? Would he be put in solitary or are your prisoners not prone to shank eachother like ours?

Varg Vikernes was able to record and release two albums and take leave time to visit family while serving a prison sentence in Norway. Things might be different for this guy, but they don't really seem all that harsh.

No, Norway doesn't have capital punishment.

Prisons in Norway (and Sweden) are generally considered extremely "soft" by international standards. But a prison is still a prison, and this guy's crimes are kind of... unprecedented in Norway, at least since WW2, so there's no telling what will happen.
