First of all, fuck that. I despise Rick Warren and all he stands for. Not sure why Obama would pick a bigot to give the invocation.

K now to the bigger issue. I just had a debate with my mom about the ethics of actually having a government sponsored prayer (the invocation). I've always been a staunch supporter of no religion in government and this seems to be a direct church/state violation to me. However, my mother brought up a good point. She said it wasn't about the religion, rather that the person is swearing on all he believes in to serve his country well. Thoughts on this issue?

Obama is reassuring the populace that he is a devout Christian in order that his administration has the blessing of as many Americans as possible. Once again he, as any realist politician would do, is playing the God card to garner support. The last thing he needs is to put out all his reforms only to be rejected because too many people think he's not on God's side. Because that's how most of the country thinks....

    .

As for the swearing in, I don't particularly care either way. I think keeping creationism out of schools and religious bigotry out of politics is much more important than "Under God" or swearing on the Bible.

and it's not like Obama can do anything about it now. He's already put it out there. If he revokes the invitation, the shitstorm will be even bigger.

I think what's more dastardly is he gave the guy from Monsanto a cabinet position

between that and Rick Warren = giant facepalm

I would like to extend my middle finger to:

Obama, Rick Warren, and Monsanto. I don't have the words to express how much I disapprove of the above mentioned 3 entities.

He also played the "change" card to secure the presidency. However, one look at his appointments for his administration show otherwise.

Yep, because who you appoint for those seats is definitely not just a bunch of smart political moves set up so maybe he can actually get things done.

    We'll see.

He's not even in office yet! He's setting it up so that he can get the most done as possible. He has Warren doing the invocation to shut the religious right up for a few months. Give him a few months in office and then form an opinion, right now he hasn't done shit except appoint cabinet officials and other such stuff.

I don't really blame Obama for this. He ran his campaign on trying to look past ideological issues like abortion and gay marriage. Rick Warren may be a gigantic asshole when it comes to those things, but he has done a lot of good things to help in the fight against AIDS. Also if you're going to have a prayer, might as well have someone who represents people who actually give a shit about prayer. And finally you have to throw religious people a bone now and then so they won't be retarded when you want to get smart things done.

Rick Warren is a step in the right direction after Billy Graham, who is at this point only semi-alive. I would also like people to stop assuming that every person who seems to be intelligent is an atheist, since there's no solid basis for believing that Obama is an atheist at this point, whether or not he is. Obama and Warren have a relationship, despite their acknowledged disagreements, so I can't even imagine what other pastor he could have conceivably chosen anyway.

That was only mildly disgustingly biased, and not at all accounting for the political system. But that's okay, obviously McCain was the better option, right?

Of course not. Pointing out that the past choices of Obama's cabinet selections are questionable at best is a perfectly valid and relevant exercise to do.

And clearly those sources are biased since both are voices of dissent.

Edit: I suppose I should also state the obvious that I do not necessarily support all the viewpoints presented in the video or article (i.e. Al Gore being a part of Obama's administration).

I still stand by my dogma of realism, whereby I voted for Obama rather than a more radical third party candidate. The lesser of two evils in a two-party system is always the best choice.
