so i've been lately getting into pain killer and naked city and all of john zorn's works, and it got me to wonder, are there more chaotic fast and brutal jazz/noise music out there outside the realm of metal? i know japan has a really good noise scene, but i don't know where to start. if anyone out there is versed in this field could you give me some recommendations?
Masonna Merzbow Aube Hijokaidan Hanatarash Mitchell Akiyama Incapacitants Government Alpha LSD March KK Null Sachiko M Whitehouse Bastard Noise Muslimgauze Yellow Swans Keiji Haino Throbbing Gristle Imminent Starvation Nurse With Wound That lot should give you a good introduction to noise/avant-garde/whatever you want to call it.
I'm not a pro on this stuff, but... Crotchduster. Celtic Frost too, but you probably already know them.
I've seen a few good noise bands in my day. Sword Heaven are quite an experience, though I don't know how their albums stand up to their live performance. Swans (select releases) and MZ412 are two other good choices.

I can't stand that cd. I love Mike Patton and his projects, but the two solo cds of his that I've heard (Adult Themes and the one with the Italian Title) did absolutely nothing for me. Adult Themes for Voice is literally just Mike Patton screaming and making vocals noises into a tape recorder for half an hour. there's avant garde, and then there's just fucking pointless
Great band. Anyways, as for avant-jazz: John Coltrane (late-period) Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" Peter Brotzmann Octet
