    Forest Stream

    From: Russia

Discography: “Tears of Mortal Solitude” (2003), “The Crown Of Winter” (2009)

Forest Stream is a symphonic black / doom metal band. Signed to Candlelight Records in 2007, Forest Stream’s style is heavily influenced by the harsh Russian winters as well as Norwegian black metal. Forest Stream is:

    Sonm the Darkest- vocals
    Wizard Omin- guitars
    Tyrant Moloch- bass
    Berserk- guitars
    Elhekka- keyboards
    Kir- drums

Forest Stream’s depressive “doom and gloom” style is cold enough to chill you to the bone. Their second album, “The Crown Of Winter” is what ultimately sold me on this band. Choosing a departure from the doom/goth metal “norm”, “The Crown” incorporates elements of experimental metal- a testament to the bands creativity. If you like Wine From Tears or Forest of Shadows, give Forest Stream a listen.

Единственным отличием от своего предшественника является большой упор на блэк-дэт-метал в таких песнях, как «Bless You To Die» и «The Seventh Symphony Of Satan».

    Sorry for post in russian.

It took six years but finally The Crown Of Winter, the new disc Forest Stream, is here; authors in 2003's masterpiece "Tears Of Mortal Solitude, in the years following the news about them became more and more scarce ( except for an appearance on a tribute to Katatonia and some concerts mostly in Russia, their homeland), so as to fear that their outstanding full-length debut would no longer have a following. Fortunately it did not happen-again active in the live since 2007, the Forest Stream have recently sealed their comeback with an album whose exceptional fully repay its long gestation. In the period between The Crown Of Winter by its predecessor, in addition, two new members joined the line-up, so now you see the drummer and bassist Tyrant Moloch Kir accompany the singer (and, once, even bacteria and keyboardist) Sonm The Darkest, guitarists Wizard man has a Berserk, and the keyboard (and, one time drummer) Elhella.

But before looking at what their latest work has to offer, we take a step back and Tears of Mortal Solitude. Hailed by critics and is still remembered as the hidden jewel of doom metal, the first album by Forest Stream stood out for his strong personality, for his elegant style, and his incredible level of quality, rare qualities, especially for a band to its debut record. Fort etremamente evocative melodies and melancholic (on a carpet of keyboards everywhere, but never pushy), the compositional structures of articulated, and a flawless vocal performance (including growls, screams, and clean), Tears Of Mortal Solitude is not difficult to impose as a true milestone in the recent history of doom metal. E 'Clearly, then, that The Crown of Winter is having to raise an important legacy, and on the other hand would be easy to repeat the success with a slavish repetition of a formula so appreciated, but this is not the case: the Forest Stream still astonish, but they do so through the renewal and experimentation.

Be clear that this is not excessive distortions, but rather a new way to frame within the well-established and already in itself original, the band. Where Tears of Mortal Solitude always kept a pretty solid balance between melody and aggression, The Crown Of Winter pushes on the accelerator of both components: ie, the new platter allows himself time to explorations of atmosphere more dilated and articulated, as in broadsides speed and brutality not unlike that pursued by the Emperor in the second half of their career, collecting black metal influence then only hinted at in previous albums. The result is a brilliant hybrid of symphonic black and doom, mediated by the particular sensitivity and remarkable skill with which the Forest Stream use to shape their songs.

The slower and more melodic component is calibrated by using a much larger - than in the past - of clean vocals, which is surprising for the agility with which it is able to go deeper interpretations and suffered a more epic tone and solemn, and sections more violent and up-tempo, however, rest on a battery pressing, both in perfect blastbeat fill that in more complex, and on a guitar work is extremely refined in its field rhythmic, whose power is much enhanced by the clean production , and in the solo. Real protagonists of such complexity, however, are the keyboards, able to weave more engaging (often duet with guitars) and conducts the sound of Forest Stream on different shores of the many facets of their songwriting, employment - as needed -- Accompanying the role of atmosphere or driving force of the music. Excellent also down, which way to stand out mainly during the more subdued passages as essential support of the melodies.
The different souls of Forest Stream not travel on parallel tracks, but they chase each other and continually meeting, so as to produce songs long and very elaborate, a blow that without changing the time and atmosphere: every phrasing is perfectly connected, each shift register is carefully calibrated so that it passes naturally from the melancholy grandeur, the sensitivity to aggression. The voice, meanwhile, is able to highlight the most of every moment, thanks to a flexibility that allows it to excel in each of the styles offered by it, for expressiveness differ less clean execution, as for the captivating ferocity of growl and the scream.
Così come in Tears Of Mortal Solitude , anche in The Crown Of Winter c'è da constatare un'impeccabile continuità qualitativa, che rende l'ascolto sempre interessante grazie alla sua varietà e la sua poliedricità. As in Tears of Mortal Solitude, also in The Crown of Winter there is to see an impeccable continuity of quality, which makes listening more interesting because of its variety and its versatility.

Well, the wait was long but the end result shows that it is completely worth the trouble: The Crown Of Winter, like its predecessor, is a masterpiece, and highlights the extraordinary ability of a group that, in just two albums, was able to impose itself on the very high standards of their proposal. Eleganza, potenza, melodia, complessità, eclettismo: i Forest Stream racchiudono tutte queste caratteristiche, e con The Crown Of Winter firmano una delle migliori uscite di metal estremo del 2009. Elegance, power, melody, complexity, eclecticism: the Forest Stream encompass all these characteristics, and The Crown Of Winter sign one of the best extreme metal releases of 2009.

The Forest Stream is a band from Russia and is from 1995 but not at all known to the public. After some releases and some unfortunate incidents reached at Candlelight Records we bring their second cd entitled The Crown Of Winter. I really impressed with what I heard the cd and I think I will continue to listen for a long time. The band plays doom with some black metal elements from mainly voice. The songs are long in duration and thus give the band great place to experiment with the melodies and the vocals (listen to the first track and you will understand). There is a whole cd katathliptiki and a cold air and it counts the wild. Particular reference to this point we need to do to Elhella which does an amazing job in pliktra.I band has taken elements from the Dimmu Borgir and the European doom scene and reminded me of some songs and some songs of Tiamat. In general, however, in my opinion it is wrong to try to put a label. There is considerable variation in cd to characterize a type only. Really impressed by the cd and I think it is worth very much.

Hi, I'm the one who wrote that review, I'm glad you appreciated it! :)

I used to come to these forums to read news about The Crown Of Winter's progresses (when it was still in process of being recorded), today I just passed by again, and I was very happy to see my review posted here.

However, I saw that Google didn't translate it properly, so I did it by myself and registered to post it. Here's the review:

It took six years, but finally The Crown Of Winter, Forest Stream's new album, is here; authors, in 2003, of the masterpiece Tears Of Mortal Solitude, news about them became more and more scarce in the following years (except for an appearance on a tribute to Katatonia and some concerts mostly in Russia, their homeland), to the point that it was feared their extraordinary debut full-length would not get a sequel. Luckily, that wasn't the case: active again in the live department since 2007, Forest Stream have recently sealed their comeback with an album whose excellency fully repays its long gestation. In the lapse of time between The Crown Of Winter and its predecessor, furthermore, two new members have joined the line-up, so that singer (and, formerly, drummer and keyboardist) Sonm The Darkest, guitarists Wizard Omin and Berserk, and keyboardist (and, formerly, drummer) Elhella are now supported by drummer Kir and bass-player Tyrant Moloch.

But before looking at what their latest work has to offer, let's step back to Tears Of Mortal Solitude. Hailed by critics and still remembered as a hidden jewel of doom metal, the first album by Forest Stream stood out for its strong personality, its elegant style, and its incredible quality; rare features, especially for a band on its debut. Thanks to extremely melancholic and evocative melodies (supported by extensive, but wise, keyboard playing), complex songwriting, and flawless vocal performance (including growls, screams, and clean singing), Tears Of Mortal Solitude easily established itself as a true milestone in the recent history of doom metal. The Crown Of Winter had an important legacy to carry on, and it would have been easy just to repeat such a winning formula, but this is not the case: Forest Stream manage to astonish once again, but they do so through renewal and experimentation.

Be it clear that there are no excessive twists, but rather novelties to be framed within a style already well-established and original on its own. Whereas Tears Of Mortal Solitude always kept a pretty solid balance between melody and aggression, The Crown Of Winter goes wild on both those components: the new album introduces both longer atmospheric explorations and outbursts of violence not unlike those shown by Emperor during the second half of their career, thus incorporating a black metal influence only hinted at in the previous album. The result is a brilliant hybrid between symphonic black and doom, mediated by the particular sensitivity and the remarkable skill Forest Stream take advantage of to shape their songs.

The slower and more melodic component is highlighted by a much larger use - compared to the past - of clean vocals, which stand out for their agility to switch from deep, intense interpretations to more epic and solemn tones; the harsher and faster passages rely on a hard-pressing drumming, which excels in both blastbeats and more complex fills, and on a very refined guitarwork in both rythm and lead departments. Keyboards, however, are the true protagonists of such complexity, for their ability to create captivating melodies (often dueting with guitars) and leading Forest Stream's sound on the different shores of the many faces of their songwriting, employing - as needed - the role of atmospheric accompainment or driving force of the music. Bass-playing is excellent too, and stands out the most during the quieter passages as essential support to the melodies.
The different souls of Forest Stream do not travel on parallel tracks, but they chase each other and continuously meet, so as to produce very elaborate and long songs, that seamlessly shift tempo and atmosphere: every phrasing is perfectly connected, each register change is carefully calibrated so that the flowing naturally shifts from melancholy to majesty, from softness to aggression. The vocals, meanwhile, are capable of highlighting perfectly every passage, thanks to a flexibility that allows them to excel in each of the styles offered, from the expressivity of the clean singing, to the enthralling ferocity of growled and screamed vocals.
Just like Tears Of Mortal Solitude, The Crown Of Winter exhibits too a flawless qualitative continuity, which makes listening to it always interesting thanks to its variety and its versatility.

The wait was long, but the result shows that it was completely worth the trouble: The Crown Of Winter, like its predecessor, is a masterpiece, and highlights the extraordinary abilities of a band that, in just two albums, was able to impose itself thanks to the very high standards of its music. Elegance, power, melody, complexity, eclecticism: Forest Stream features all of these, and with The Crown Of Winter they released one of the best extreme metal albums of 2009.

    Score: 90/100

Они опасаются, особенно, когда мы услышали первый альбом Tears Of Mortal Solitude, своего рода дань My Dying Bride (выпущена в 2003 году). Surprenant.

Crown Of Winter

If a band releases its debut and then you do not see or hear from them for almost seven years, you usually deem them lost. Well, not if you are playing a mostly Doom influenced style, because then even the creative process seems to be slow. Back in 2002, FOREST STREAM’s debut “Tears Of Mortal Solitude” was an instant classic in the genre, fusing Doom Metal with influences from Death, Black and Gothic into an atmospheric masterpiece, reminding me of a mixture between MY DYING BRIDE, KATATONIA and OPETH, big names in the scene, but definitely deserved given the quality. Now the trio has grown into a sextet and jumped ship from Earache sub-label Elitist to Candlelight Records and “The Crown Of Winter” is the result.

Now can they duplicate the magic, though, that had garnered them such a fervent following in the underground? And the answer is yes, they could. The six songs (plus intro and outro) take you away onto a journey through the wilderness, cold, harsh and bleak yet you are in a beautiful, warm and comfortable place. And you can attribute certain elements with any of these adjectives, the cold harshness of the growls, the bleakness of the gloomy atmosphere, the beauty of the long, sweeping instrumental passages, the warmth of the melodies and the comfort of the sheer epic nature of the album, all rolled into one great album and I maintain that 2009 IS the year of Doom, because it is truly uncanny how many high class Doom releases this year has seen (there may be as many as seven Doom-related releases in my Top 20 of the year!).

While the heavier outbursts, such as “Bless You To Die”, which is the fastest/heaviest song of FOREST STREAM to date, bring in some variety and dynamics, the Russians’ strength still lies within the elegiac Doom epics and atmospheres that hold this emotive strength that only Doom bands manage to capture, and thankfully we get plenty of those in these long songs (the shortest one clocks in at 7 minutes and 38 seconds), with the deep growls sometimes giving place to spoken word and some cleanly sung passages. Sometimes the atmosphere reminds me a little of KATATONIA, just heavier and with more growls, revealing beauty under the heavy guitars, which is greatly aided by the excellent clear production.

If you like Doom Metal (and don’t have problems with some heavier and faster sections), then FOREST STREAM’s second is a must for you and even if you normally like the heavier end of the spectrum the mentioned faster and heavier passages (which are at times fairly Black Metal influenced) might just be enough to attract even you to the Russians’ sound. I just hope it won’t take them more than six years again to conjure up magical spell number 3!

И дождались-вот он- The crown of winter. Непривычной, на мой взгляд, может оказаться песенка The Seventh Symphony Of...

"Beautifull nature"

Last year Candlelight Records announced the signing of the Russian formation Forest Stream. With an album behind him entitled "Tears of Mortal Solitude" published in 2003 by Earache, has spent much time to Muscovites who have remained virtually disappeared during this time. With "The Crown Of Winter" has finally seen the light of day, we can enjoy a really personal band within the broad Russian scene, and all a plus for fans of more melodic doom metal and loaded with beautiful atmospheres, recreated by cutting some magical piano keyboards and long instrumental as it gives us the subject-title "The Crown Of Winter" with heavys riffs that together with a remarkable rhythm section are faithfully repeat some great atmospheres, to finish merging them . The vocal section, continuing the theme in question, a melodic and unhurried voice carries weight initially but not long guttural equivalent appear to raise the issue, highlighting a good pair of both and a little appreciable detail of a female voice and by the end.
Initially soaked in his eight passages before mentioning only a couple of them, the next track, "Mired" has an epic entry, low very fast, heavy battery and a very melodic riff that is cut dry for a few seconds to enter the male voice, again both reflect the many changes of rhythm in each passage as the guttural make the song grow in this particular mentioned that the guitars are the main protagonists but would be a mistake not to mention again the great accompaniment orchestra. Following my unexpected encounter with a "Bless You To Die" of air blackmetal although its most modern branch, double-kick with a superb start and interrupted by harrowing voices dirty riffs and clean vocals interspersed at times reminding me a bit to the American Abigail Williams (bridging the gap), just as "The Seventh Symphony Of Satan, rather similar. Meanwhile, "The Autumn Dancers" becomes an intermediate of its predecessor but with a more melodic point on guitars, combining with darker riffs. The guttural voice begins to take the reins from here and keyboards are becoming more and more symphonic in short, as the disc progresses gradually becomes darker.
I ended up talking about almost every track, the truth is that I am at a remarkable comeback that of the Russians, without missing a moment of quality precedes them, the album is varied, both supporters of doom sounds, and black, should find something here that pleases them.
The huge environment that follows the rest is the icing on the cake.

Things like this one do actually evoke some hope in me!
    ==================================

Way back in nineteen eighty whatever, most U.S. adolescents pretty much thought that Russia was just this big land mass somewhere to the east, er . . . west, uh . . . east and west of us, that practiced a pretty piss poor civil rights policy. I know I didn’t know squat about the country other than they had a lot of nuclear warheads aimed at me (I lived in a military town, so it stands to reason that I would have been one the first recipients of said warhead.) It wasn’t until we had all that hoopla of Glasnost and the Wall coming down that I started to recognize the rich culture that Russia had tucked away in its frozen nether regions. No longer was I ashamed of my Russian heritage, and now, I embrace it with a weird sense of pride. So, how thrilled was I when I received the second full length release from Forest Stream through some contacts with Candlelight Records? About as thrilled as when Alex Ovechkin scores a goal!

For years, I’ve watched the Scandinavian countries produce one epic metal band after another. I’ve seen Greece produce more than its fair share of stunning power and doom metal. Recently, France has blown up with its low end fueled experimental sounds. Is it time for another wall to come crumbling down? Will Russia be the next great land of heavy metal expression? Man . . . wouldn’t that be something!

The Crown of Winter is deathly metallic and ethereally ambient at the same time. Forest Stream work in great musicianship to their complex and highly emotive compositions. In a lot of ways, this album can be thought of as a thinking man’s record, because there is so much going on in the way of shifting textures and haunting moods. There are massive time changes, odd time signatures, and heady themes that make this disc quite comfortable nestling up next to your favorite prog-metal albums. Is it totally fresh and original? Sadly, no. But the music is performed at such a high level that the Opethian melodies and Akerfeldt-like vocal barks don’t bother me as much as they would if performed by a less than able unit. Yes, there are Opeth similarities to the sounds, and by no means does Forest Stream come across like a cheap knock off of the Swedish metal masters. There’s something else a bit less tangible mixed into the music that gives these guys their own individuality, a strange new voice in way of modern metal.

After a beautifully emotional ambient build up as an introduction, Forest Stream launch into the eleven and a half minute title track of the album. Huge waves of distortion crash down upon the delicate plinking of the piano keys, cannon fire drums punch holes through said wave of guitars, and then the instruments swim like a playful school of fish, darting around one another in a roaring sea of sound. The vocals join the dance with a strange sense of sadness, suddenly making everything seem so desolate and hollow. Then, in classic death metal fashion, the vocals shift to that of a perturbed and unfed bear fresh from its winter hibernation. What a great dynamic shift! Amidst the flurries of metallic notes soaring through the soundscape, various melodies weave in and out of the chaos, sending this song to some higher plain. Then, it all goes away. The storm vanishes and leaves us hearing a gorgeous clean tones guitar plaintively strumming chords over a huge synthesizer passage. Absolutely beautiful work in how the band wrapped all of these sounds and themes around each other to create such an epic song! For all intents and purposes, this has to be categorized in with prog-metal, and some of the finest that I’ve heard.

Following the album opener, “Mired” bursts from the speakers with double bass drums afire and a triumphant melody line to lend an interesting contrast to the barrage of death riffagry, and then . . . whoa. Forest Stream lay down a mind blowing goth-y sort of soft passage filled that has shades of Katatonia mixed in the emotion. It’s dark and eerie, bordering on creepy. The kind of music that might work well in digging a grave to bury one’s lost beloved. Though this moment is short lived, the oncoming death metal pummeling is a perfect fit and moves the song along nicely. The vocals and melodies on this track remind me of Opeth, blackened in a fiery pit of hate and individual torture. The clean toned guitars towards the middle of the song fooled me for a brief minute into thinking I was hearing a piano adding further texture. Awesome! Way to keep me guessing! I absolutely love it when a band challenges me with the use of sounds and odd time arrangements. Nothing sucks more than predictable music. Well, other than utterly terrible music.

It’s basically like this, folks. The Crown of Winter is progressive death metal. That’s about as simple as I can put it. Ultimately, this album is an example of excellent execution in composition, musical arrangement, and instrumentation, all of which make up for the music’s somewhat lack of originality. Also, the conveyance of emotion is superb. While listening to this album, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the bleakness, the solitude, the despair. I can feel the tortured souls on this recording and I like it! It makes me want to pack up all of my earthly belongings and set sail on an old Norse ship, or to live out of a vibrantly colored wagon in the foothills of the Ural Mountains. And, maybe more importantly, Forest Stream make me want to visit Russia and explore even further the musical treasures that are hidden from the masses of America. If you need me, I’ll be surfing the net . . . Googling Russian metal bands and seeing what comes up next. - Pope JTE
