the rhythm is totally different in that tune at least. the coldplay song is the same key, same melody, same chord progression...

still deep down i dont feel coldplay ripped it off, but i dont mind seeing them get fined. it appears there is a limit on how annoying your music can be before karma catches up with you one way or another.

seemed like a stretch to say coldplay ripped him off...but i went with it.

but after seeing that last song that was released in 2001 by that Frances Limon guy...that makes me think satriani needs to take a breathe.

granted it was a different key and movement...but...:erk:

    meh

"Frances Limon" is the name of the song actually and band is called Los Enanitos Verdes, great Argentinean rock band. I'm really digging their music surprisingly.

I'd like to hear how the Satriani/Coldplay case turns out anyways, should be an interesting case.

Is this possible? ....Did you ever have a melody come into your head but you can't recall where or who you heard it from OR maybe you even feel it came from your own mind. It IS possible someone from Coldplay heard the Satch tune but literally did not remember? I've done it plenty of times, the difference? I am not a major recording artist like Coldplay! I feel it truly could have been an honest mistake OR coincidentally wrote the same melody. The melody is a pretty common progression so it is likely. Sorry Satch, I'm sure Coldplay will not want to collaberate in the future, DROP IT and be happy people out there still know who you are bro.

They were talking about this story on the Howard Stern show this morning. Howard played the Satch song, the Coldplay song, and the the YouTube clip of the two together. They all agreed Coldplay, whose been a frequent guest on the show, are guilty. Obviously, there's nothing critical about Howard Stern's opinion. Just interesting to hear someone other than us music fanatics weigh in.

It doesn't matter if it was intentional or not. For Satch to win he has to show that they are similar enough and that Coldplay had the opportunity to hear his version, there's no requirement to show intent.

Listening to the two, it's obvious how similar they are. I think Satch will win.

Yep, although if someone could point to an incident where Coldplay was listening to the song, it would add a lot to Joe's case.

What caught my ear wasn't just the melody, but -- as heard in the combined YouTube video -- the timing is exactly the same, too. I concur, Satch has a decent chance.

Satriani is a brilliant guitarist, BUT.... I've always thought that his songs for the most part, are really basic, bland, run-of-the-mill background rhythms used to solo over. It's not surprising if another band came up with a similar melody. It's one of the reasons that I don't listen to Joe that often; fantastic solos.....boring songs. (I was/am a Shrapnel junkie, so you know what kind of instrumental stuff I like. Give me Marty Friedman, Greg Howe or Jason Becker any day of the week!)
BTW- The Coldplay tune does sound almost exactly like the Satch track......hmmmmmm

Well, the best thing to come out of all this is that I got to hear "If I Could Fly" for the first time since I'm not too familiar with Satriani's stuff. Great song.

The record company demands that radio company (both owned by the same media conglomerate) play the Coldplay stuff so as many people are exposed to the record company's product increasing the chances that they will buy the record company's product. It's all about management, money, kissing ass, and being in the right place at the right time for bands to get the proper record-label marketing to get the exposure to be financially successful. Always has been.
