Was just watching the Testament - Dark Roots Of Thrash DVD (Which I love) but also think is ridiculously good mix/ production wise, a little TOO good :p... And then found this little part!

1:06:40 - 1:06:55 - Watch Skolnick, and his magical ability to play a riff while waving his arms in the air! I wonder just HOW MUCH of these live shows get overdubbed/ rerecorded. Honestly.. I don't particularly care, but I'm curious nonetheless!

Doesn't sound like a live concert, the sound is too perfect, there's no live vibe on it. Whats the point to release a live dvd if it sounds nearly as an studio album?

Looks like the guitar player is doing a ring out with his arm in the air, and the other guitar player is playing the riff.
I've heard that with big dvd shows like this the bands would play the whole set before the show opens so they get a good quality recording with no audience and with out them running around and headbanging.
Then record when the show is going so they have adlibs, the audience and the audio between songs.
Two whole set takes to blend in and stuff.
Read that a long time ago about an All That Remains and an August Burns Red dvd.

I had a conversation with a friend of mine long ago about this point. By the time the DVD that I thought exactly the same was Set This World Ablaze by Killswitch engage. Man, the dvd has a so awesome sound that the word "live" doesnt make much sense.

Of course we all want to see and hear a DVD/live show with a good sound. But to me, the record of a live show must retain the vibe, the emotion, some rawness of a live show, and this come with imperfections or isnt a live show at all and I also think that recording a live show is somehow a prove that the band is consistent and good enough to do it wihout overdubbing all the shit they want in the studio.

OK, ok I know that I am not in the 80´s/90´s anymore!:Smug: so today the word vibe is very old school!ahah kinda sad but true.

I KNEW this would open with Dark Roots...I thought exactly the same. I really love Live In London because it sounds killer yet it's really quite live. Dark Roots sounds 90% overdubbed, which is a shame =(

Still great DVD though, got it for x-mas ;)

Man, I know it's Testament, but that looks fucking boring. From the way they're moving, it looks like it's their first gig ever or something. I'd be pissed to pay for tickets to see that, let alone buy a live dvd with fake performance...

I'm also curious as to how often live DVD's are fixed up. Probably a lot more than most people think.

It's sorta like all those play-through videos with actual album audio laid over the video. Makes me angry even though it sounds great.

Since everybody's doing it, here's my band. Fixed a guitar feedback issue or two which you can hear vaguely through the room mics but that's just about it.

I was there for the recording, heard mistakes and prayed they'd be kept in! And they were, which is awesome, because it was a FUN and ENERGETIC show, of course mistakes happen, that's part of the beauty of live music! NO ONE IS PERFECT

Yeah, that's how I see it too.
If I want perfect I'll buy the cd...
Live DVDs I watch for the energy and vibe.

I also feel the mix on the Testament DVD is lacking in balls compared to the CD as well, can barely hear Greg most of the time.
