This is inspired by the discussion about terminator. I've put together a list of the topic of evile songs just to see if we managed to cover a broad range of subjects or if we've written the same song 40 times. See what you think, do they match with your views? Keep in mind that some of them are open to interpretation as they contain a few different layers of meaning. Enter the Grave - Serial killer Thrasher - Thrashing (thrash metal band must have) First blood - Film Man against machine - Societal oppression (maybe?) Burned alive - Historical (plus a bit of fiction) Killer from the deep - Shark attack We who are about to die - historical and film Schizophrenia - Mental illness Bathe in blood - Historical Armoured assault - Tank battles (as far as i know) Infected nation - scummers ruining life for everyone else Now demolition - book Nosophoros - vampires as a metaphor for racism. I cant remember how. Genocide - how i felt researching genocide Plague to end all plagues - cant remember, i think its about greedy bankers fucking everyone over for their own gain. Devoid of thought - Liars Time no more - my lack of self confidence (ironically) Metamorphosis - Us as a band going through musical changes, exploring different ideas Hundred wrathful deities - Guitar tomfoolery Five serpents teeth - not telling In dreams of terror - lovecraft inspired nightmares Cult - religious brainwashing Eternal empire - heaven/afterlife is a load of bollocks, do good things to make this life better for everyone, not just yourself for after you die. I dont like religion obviously. Xaraya - child abuse Origin of oblivion - absolutely no idea Centurion - historical In memoriam - Loss Descent into madness - mentall illness again Long live new flesh - still not telling Underworld - my thoughts on the bands status in the world of music Skull - ols crazy space concept/dreams Naked sun - book inspired with added fiction Head of the demon - story about ritual sacrifice Tomb - contemplation of suicide Words of the dead - a dream i had set in the world of a film Outsider - lovecraft story What you become - obsession/possession New truths old lies - political
This post is literally heaven to me, I think about song meanings all the time. Also, I bought a copy of The Demolished Man way back last year, I understand why you've written so many songs about it because wow that is one good fucking book. My thought was that Xaraya was about someone dying but didn't think it was about abuse. Huh. I swear to god i'm gonna figure out FST and Long Live one day.
Not telling is a great lyrical subject matter Isn't the title Five Serpent's Teeth a line from a book you read?
It's a line from The Demolished Man, here's a pic of it I took back when I bought the book and read it
Xaraya - Child Abuse ...and I made a parody of this? All jokes aside, I think the explainations for FST and Skull (or lack thereof in FST, Origin of Oblivion and Long Live) have given me a bigger appreciation for Matt's lyrical work.
I preferred Nosophoros when it was Shit Band No Fans/Jack Bauer's Power Crotch, but we can't all be winners.
I'd quite like the intro/outro for the next record to be a simple cover of the theme from The X-Files.
