I don't think anyone was implying that they'd rather have filler songs than have a 30 minute album with good songs. If a band is good enough I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a 45 minute album with good songs and no fillers. I don't know, 30 min. seems more like an EP to me but I guess it also depends on the genre.

Agree again. The quality of the songs and the length of the album are not mutually exclusive factors in this discussion imo. Quality songs are implied. If they aren't, the CD is no good, no matter if it's 30 minutes or 60.

So maybe we should rephrase the question to:
How long should an album of good quality songs ideally be?

At least that's the position where I'm coming from.

Nope. I just try to get in the range of 35-40 minutes and dont bother with how many tracks it consists of. One could be ten minutes, another could be 4.

Our first two albums were 34 mins and 37 mins, and I heard several comments that they were a bit too short for a full length album. My personal feeling is that even at less than 30 minutes, Reign In Blood is still an excellent album. But it is of course also important to listen to what the fans say. However, I also feel that very few albums more than 60 minutes long are "worth it". The sweet spot seems to be 45 minutes to me :) at around 4 minutes per song, that's a decent enough 11 tracks.

Damn with all your opinions make me think about maybe reducing the stuff I'm working on lol. 15 tracks/80 minutes.

^record/demo all of those and pick the STRONGEST ones. save the rest for later after you have developed them to be as strong as the rest.

^Yea i think that's the best move. The perceived quality of your album may end up higher, you have more stuff left for your follow up, and people won't shut it down 3/4th of the way in because they get tired/want to do something else. Even a perfect album may be hard to endure for longer than an hour.

Unless the album tells a story; I treat those as a special category.

A 35-45 min album is a good timing for me. A part from that, I would record one or two songs more just in case bonus tracks are needed.
