Absence of Light (just to give it some love :p)
Medusa (as previously stated by everyone not really into either song)
Lady of the Snow (to me one of their most unique songs and I don't particularly agree that it's anything Candlelight due to the very Japanese tones which sound completely different than Candlelight to me)
The Relic (This song is awesome!)

I don't think it actually sounds anything like Candlelight; it's more so the placement of it on the album, going for the "Divine Wings" effect (where they put the lightest track last). The songs have a similar feel in the fact that they're both lighter tunes, but that's where the similarities stop.

Agreed here. I just saw the mention of Candlelight 2.0 earlier and thought that couldn't be further from the truth in how I hear those two songs. They definitely went for the same affect as Divine Wings there for sure though.

    1. Communion and the Oracle. No contest. Absence is a good song, but Communion is my favourite SX song, along with Divine and Odyssey. It immediately got me, which not all songs on V did (in the first place, that is).

Even though the whole song is great, I think the intro and the outro are the standouts. The intro is always so relaxing listening to; the clean guitar arpeggio playing 4 measures, then this lovely bright-sounding keyboard line comes in, along with the drums, followed by bass and then Romeo playing these somewhat trademark staccato chords.

The “breathe the air around you” – part is also worth mentioning. I love how it just “flows”, and what’s so cool about it is that each instrument play their own part, there’s no “doubling” at any sort. Love it.

When it comes to the outro…. It’s honestly the best thing I’ve heard in my entire life. I have listened to Communion more than any other SX song, and I’ve never ever skipped the outro (or other parts of the song). It is a real showcase of greatness from the polyrhytmic masters. I LOVE the (again) bright-sounding melody line that Pinnella plays over the guitar arpeggio, it could have gone on forever and I still wouldn’t be tired of it.

Also, the whole band just kick major ass; I have got myself thinking many times how awesome Rullo plays that part, and the bass is great as well, simple but just what it needs to be.

The choir and bells gives it a rather haunting ending, and I think it’s cool that they do a modulation right at the end; after staying in the same key (E minor) for a minute and a half (which must be a new record ;) ), they go up to G sharp, nicely building it up to Bird-Serpent War. Man, I remember Detective made a thread about SX being the masters of odd time signatures, modulations, and polyrhythms, and Communion is a perfect example of that.

    2. Eyes of Medusa. A cool, groovy song with a decent chorus.

    3. Lady of the Snow. Not a big fan of Electric Messiah. Lady is decent, though not in the same class Church or Looking Glass from the same album.

    4. A Winter’s Dream Pt.II. I love Pt.I, and the sequel is good as well. The intro reminds a bit of Spock’s Beard. I especially like the pre-chorus and the chorus.

    Results are up.

Communion and the Oracle beats Absence of Light 14-1
The Eyes of Medusa beats Taunting the Notorious 13-2
Lady of the Snow beats Electric Messiah 13-2
    A Winter's Dream pt. 2 beats The Relic 9-6

Quite a decisive round, mostly, though Relic had its fair share of supporters. Absence of Light is, unfortunately, put up against Communion in the first round and is utterly defeated- a drawback to being picked randomly, I suppose.

Speaking of being picked randomly, these next four are going to be fun...

    1. Awakenings (This was pretty much a given.)

    2. Rediscovery Pt. 2 (My favorite SX song ever. It's just absolutely perfect in every way. Even if this ends up going up against Divine Wings or The Odyssey, I'm voting for it.)

    3. The Edge of Forever (REALLY tough choice on this one! Both are excellent songs, but Edge wins by a small amount.)

    4. Smoke and Mirrors (I'll be very surprised if this one doesn't get a unanimous vote.)

Awakenings, Rediscovery Pt. 2, Edge of Forever, Masquerade.

No contest on the first three...three of SX's best songs (though A Winter's Dream Pt. 1 is pretty awesome). Awakenings might be my favorite SX song along with Divine Wings, and Serpent's Kiss is probably my least favorite. Masquerade flows a bit better than Smoke and Mirrors.

How's that? I always find the section "Your sacrifice, this paradise..." completely breaks up the flow of the song, and feels rather forced, and then just as abruptly jumps to the chorus giving it a disjointed feeling. Smoke and Mirrors doesn't have anything like that, and seems to flow rather well in comparison.

Awakenings - One of my favorite songs by the band hands down
    Rediscovery part 2
The Edge of Forever - Probably the hardest one to pick yet. I really very much enjoy Iconoclast and is my favorite track from the album. Just can't beat such a fantastic track in Edge of Forever though.

Serpent's Kiss (Rediscovery, though great, never leaves much of a lasting impression on me)
    Edge of Forever
    Smoke and Mirrors

    Definitely the hardest round yet.

I see where you're coming from, but it sounds less so if you're used to Queen (which you might be of course, don't know).

Smoke and Mirrors doesn't quite gel with me, it feels stuck.

    1. Winter's Dream pt. 1 is a nice prelude to the stronger second half, but Awakenings is one of the most diverse and progressive songs the band has ever done. No contest.

    2. One of the weakest tracks from Paradise Lost going up against one of the absolute best from V (and the band's career). That bass/piano interlude in the middle of Rediscovery is one of the best things I've ever heard in my life. No contest.

    3. Iconoclast's title track is one of the highest-quality songs on the album, but it in no way can beat the beauty and pure progressiveness of a track like Edge. No contest.

    4. This is the only difficult one if you ask me. I'm not a huge fan of either track, but I had to go with Smoke since the version of Masquerade you posted was from the debut album (if it was the '98 version, I'd probably pick it). Am I the only one who thinks Smoke's solo section drags on and feels somewhat pointless?

Nah. I feel the same way about the whole song, really. I usually start the album at Church of the Machine, which is the song Id be thinking about during Smoke and Mirrors anyway!

This is easily the set of songs with the most quality so far.

    Awakenings
    Rediscovery
    Iconoclast
    Masquerade

The Edge of Forever is really good, but Iconoclast is the pinnacle of everything they've been going for with the last few albums (whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to everyone's personal preferences, I guess), a near-perfect song in its vein of music.

The toughest choice for me was the last one. Since I don't dislike Tyler nearly as much as many here seem to and Smoke and Mirrors always felt like it lacked that special something (even though it is a good song), I went with Masquerade.
