Metallica's first four albums are better than Testament, but Testament never went to complete shit like Metallica did, and their output at least always resembled thrash in some form.

Testament sorta started off wanting to do the metallica thing, and then metallica changed and Testament became what metallica should have become!

    I'll stick with metallica though

A good deal of Testament's material sounds second rate. Nowadays they're a lot better than Metallica. Even still, you're going to find people that thing "The Gathering" was a god-awful album.

I prefer most of Metallica's catalogue to Testament's, but don't particularly like either.

Testament is better at their best, but yeah, Metallica released 4 good albums, whereas Testament only had 2 comparable.

Exactly though i didnt care too much for AJFA... but Alex Skolnick was always a very good guitarist and doesn't overkill the Wah wah... though i prefer Kirk on Ride the Lightning and MOP overall to any of Skolnick's work.. i did particulary like his work on Practice what you Preach...

Testament's always been a live act; their studio output is inconsistent, but holy shit are they INCREDIBLE live. I'm gonna see em for the fourth time tomorrow. They don't have a single great album all the way through, unless you count First Strike Still Deadly. Some amazing tracks, but inconsistent as hell.

Metallica, by contrast, had four absolutely legendary albums and then largely went to shit, at least from a metal standpoint. The Loadies have some fun little bluesy hard rock bits, and I will stand by "Fixxxer"'s being a truly great song until the day I die, but basically it's those first four. Which are awesome. And they're also pretty damn good live.

    So, Metallica.

I'm going with Testament. Metallica turned to total crap after the Black album and even the Black album wasn't that good. Yeah, Metallica's first four albums were classics, and although Testament haven't been entirely consistent, they had some killer albums too like The Legacy, The New Order, Practice What You Preach, The Ritual etc. Unlike Metallica, they never really turned to total shit, they only had a few ups and downs.

Currently I would say Testament are way better, but I would agree that Metallica were better in the 80's.

There is NO question here.... TESTAMENT! They have never had a weak album, they are also really friendly. I saw them play in early june (the original lineup!) and got to hang out in the dressing room with them after the show... they were really nice. They are also one of the most amazing live bands I have ever seen.

And as far as "metallica has better guitarists" goes... I have two words for you... Alex Skolnick - end of story, bow before the guitar god =)

how about slayer vs. metallica? The difference between metallica and testament is, metallica is the most famous heavy band ever and testament a famous metal band, I mean a commercial success can say many things about a band and commercial stuff is not only about money making. Metallica simply made more people happy than the other heavy or metal bands, I think that counts the most.

Old Metallica beats old Testament easily
Newer Testament beats the shit out of newer Metallica without a problem, even though newer Testament is crap

Metallica wins overall. I rather would listen to one horrible song and one killer song than two "meh"-songs, and that is why Metallica is my choice.
