Testament and Metallica (earlier work obviously) are both half decent. There were plenty better thrash bands than them. My ass, Slayer are superior to Metallica. Actually, they're the greatest in thrash metal.
Early Metallica does not even have 1% on early Slayer. Slayer is one of the most important bands in extreme music. They blend a perfect mix of traditionalism,darkness while being extreme. Slayer is a stepping stone in the early 80's for thrash and death metal. Metallica is great but never took anything to another level. Metallica can be considered weak,poorman's thrash. Every Slayer song from the albums 'show no mercy' to 'season in the abyss' is solid besides a few on SITA. A lot of bands have trouble writing great riffs countless times but Slayer never did. Dave Lombardo is an incredible drummer. A main problem with bands is they can not write solid hooks/riffs,especially newer generations. You get tons of bands that play fuzzy powerchords,single notes fast,don't groove and rock, it's just stupid and does nothing. What happened to bands forming genuine riffs that mean something. Slayer is a perfect hybrid and embodiment of everything that is dark and metal. Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King have wrote so many memorable riffs that majority of 'metal' bands have nothing on them for just that reason. Slayer is easily the Iron Maiden,Judas Priest of thrash. They consistantly wrote great powerful and memorable songs that brought a great vibe. You should be thankful slayer formed. If not you have no place in metal.

Sure Slayer owns metallica.I saw them live a week ago and the show was fucking awesome.And i think Testament is better than metallica.Its true that testament never had a week album and they released great albums.(Legacy, The gathering,the ritual etc.)Their line-up great and i love their work much than metallica.

Metallica has only 2-3 amazing albums Both bands suck now as far as studio work goes Testament blows Metallica away live Testament wins maybe with the classic line up reformed Chuck can stop doing the bland cookie monster vocals and go back to his amazing unique style he used to do.

Testament has made it to my CD player more often than Metallica lately, so i guess Testament wins out for me. but i haven't listened to either in quite a while
You're right, The Grey,s it's REALLY easy to be consistent when you just write the same song 10 times and release it as an album. I like Slayer, but COME ON. Seriously.
the thing that lets metallica down are their latest 3 studio albums (etc garage inc.) Load, Reload and St Anger, sounds like the talent that metallica have has just been wasted. Especially St Anger, fucking hell the only reason why i bought the album was to finish off the 10 piece album collection.
Metallica is not a very talented band overall. Lars and Kirk we're the true talent of that band, but Kirk's gone now. However back in the And Justice for all, Ride the Lightning days, they made some of my favorite songs of all time. They have a lot of shitty songs, but Unforgiven, One, Enter Sandman... these are some of my favorite songs of all time. Even if they're new bassist plays pick, plays open strings half the time, is inaudible... you know who you are Jason Newstead. But yeah I'd say Metallica for they're ability to make epic songs.
