she speaks the truth. its probably the only explanation for why artists are treated with disrespect outside of the community. although, i would think metalheads would be able to understand it, since we live in a community similar to the art community. most people are just too stupid to get it. or not willing to get it ~gR~
Wrong. Like Ozzman and I just pointed out, if that were true then scientists and engineers would be treated with just as much disrespect. There are plenty of other reasons why artists are less respected.
Because the visual art world wants to alienate the average person from thinking they're smart enough to understand visual art. I know all this. This is partly why I want to open more of you "average folk" to the world of visual art. Because less and less of us are exposed to it, especially in America. The art world here thinks it's too deep for most people. Which, I admit, it is a lot of the time, but only because people now know NOTHING about art. We've lost touch with it. Now it's all about entertainment, Hollywood...the next film, etc etc. Artists are no longer the celebrity/hero, as they used to be alongside actors. Actors are now the idols. Artists are just "loners". Visual art is "pretentious". edit: This climaxed during the Abstract Expressionist era----- Visual art was henceforth deemed above the average person, abstract artists wanted their work to be too mysterious and conceptual for the average American to grasp. They shut them out. That is why we have art critics------To TELL the average person what to think about a work of art, rather than letting them decide for themselves.
Visual art is paintings and sculptures and the like, this term is to separate it from other art like music and theatre/film.
No. Visual art only includes painting and photography and sculpture/ceramics. Film is a seperate art entirely. edit: Ender beat me to it. Like he said.
Artists are disrespected because most of them are pretentius, self centered psuedo-intellectuals without a lick of sense. Why anyone would admire that is beyond me.
Please name five contemporary (meaning: still living) artists who you believe hold up this stereotype. I find it hard to believe you even know five contemporary artists...
Most postmodern/existentialist asshats. And he can't give names, because they no longer need names (they have socially evolved beyond such trivial things).
There's some pretty sweet concept art on the Starcraft 2 website. Here's one of my more favorite ones:
Blood Fire Death - Peter Nicolai Arbo "The Wild Hunt of Odin" Hammerheart - Sir Frank Dicksee "The Funeral of a Viking" Twilight of the Gods - Not sure.
