Haven't heard these guys before. This rules. Real crusty shit.
One of the more unknown/underrated Razorback deathgrind bands IMO. Sickos from Singapore.
Always loved that album. Maybe the best example of Impetigo worship I've come across.
I think for me that award goes to GSR but WTN are right fucking up there.
I’d probably give Lord Gore that honor personally.
I considered them myself, but I actually think I like GSR just a bit more.
I refuse to let this thread die (and accept that GMD just generally doesn't give a shit about grindcore) so here's a list of this year's best grindcore albums, EPs and demos in order from best to least best.
Come with me on a magical journey.....
Gruesome Stuff Relish - Cannibalized!
This year's absolute best in grind and by a long shot too. This band in terms of quality is a horseshoe, with a middle period really only for diehards, but this one and their debut are essential.
The Men's Toilet - Eurinal Eulogies of Eurethral Eurexcrementia
Insane toiletcore duo (an American dude and a Japanese dude) for fans of Nekro Drunkz specifically, since they pretty much sound like a slicing Portland-style deathgrind band. If they ever release a full length it will probably be an instant AOTY for me.
Rawhead - Spineless Pigs
This one came out of nowhere, I'd never checked out their previous demo so I wasn't prepared for this insane Australian band who basically play Last Days of Humanity-worship. Great album art too.
The Stuntcox - Diggin' Up Our Roots
Tongue-in-cheek deathgrind, another from Australia, and the artwork sums up the music perfectly. Features the bassist from black/thrashers Lustration. I only discovered this one in the last two weeks and it was instant love. Imagine if Will Rahmer was replaced with a retarded midget and Roger Beaujard a down-syndrome wigga. Pure white trash Australian music.
Lunk - Reek of Perspiration
If the meathead weightlifters from The Toxic Avenger started a band it would be this. An American deathgrind band that exclusively plays music about bodybuilding, complete with ping-pong hyperblasting.
Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha - For the Sake of Reproductibility - A Technical Replicate
Melodic deathgrind played by one Canadian scientist. Hard to really put this one into words but this is easily one of the coolest things I've ever discovered and things like this make all the digging I do worth it. I'll check out 1000 shitty bedroom noisecore demos just to find something like this with no complaints.
Extremely Brutal - Dead Reconsiderations
8 minutes of extreme brutality. Features Hagamoto from The Men's Toilet and Dan from Sabbatory. Very classic old school sound (think late 80's). Super chunky fuzzy guitar tone.
The Borkenlayne - Pain Is the Fearminder
Another international band featuring Hagamoto (again, busy guy), scene legend KingBean and Brad and Nik from Die Pigeon Die. This is kinda what deathgrind sounds like when you incorporate some degree of songwriting haha. Weird album cover that probably causes tons of grinders to go past this album, to their own detriment!
Bone Sickness - Theater of Morbidity
Gory, punky deathgrind from Washington. To my ears sounds like Impetigo meets very early Abscess or something like that.
Galvanizer - Sanguine Vigil
Finnish sickos playing very classic deathgrind that kinda sounds like Blood and Terrorizer meets Dismember or some shit. This one was, at first, right at the top of my grind list but over the course of 2018 it has dropped a bunch of notches. Still top tier though and anybody who likes deathgrind with more emphasis on death, check it out.
Lord Gore - Cronenberg
No need to say much about this. Lord Gore playing sick and vicious gore metal. No previews for you!
Abraded - Descendants of the Swamp
Slimy shit for fans of Hemdale, General Surgery, Lord Gore, Whore etc.
Fake Meat - 食中毒
One-man Taiwanese goregrind basically paying homage to old Carcass.
Meat Spreader - A Swarm of Green Flies Over the Rusty Pot
Polish goregrind with a very meaty and heavy sound. The vocalist sounds like a monster. Think of bands like Haemorrhage, Regurgitate, Dead Infection, Impaled etc.
Gastroschisis - Demo 2018
Chunky goregrind band from fucking Malta! Very groovy at times, short and sweet, very gross and classic.
The Creatures from the Tomb - The Terryfying Menace
German brutal goregrind, one of the first grind things released in 2018 and one of the first things I checked out. I was way more enamored with this album at the beginning of the year but I still think it really rules, totally fits the b-movie creature feature album art and lyrics. Feels like something Razorback Records would have released if this came out like a decade earlier.
Cardiomyopathy - Promo 2018
Spastic Indonesian goregrind. Probably wins the award for most bonkers ping-pong drumming of the year, fucking pure insanity and I love every second of it.
Raw Decimating Brutality - Era Matarruana
Brutal deathgrind from Portugal with a dry, face-melting sound. If you follow Portuguese grind bands like Holocausto Canibal, Grog, Namek, Serrabulho then you should like these guys or at least know who they are. Perfect name for this band.
Tu Carne - Acumulación de Cadáveres
These Spanish sickos have been delivering insane cookie monster goregrind since 2001 and they're still going strong! Essential for old schoolers.
Brutal Sphincter - Analhu Akbar
Belgian goregrind with spatterings of brutal death metal, as you can tell by the band and album names they're a comedy band and it's definitely a fun album. Very much of the modern era in terms of the targets they choose to mock. VERY GROOVY so if you like bands such as Pungent Stench and Dead you will get a kick out of this record.
Heinous - The Basement
More sick caveman shit from America. The record title says it all, sounds basically like early Mortician to me.
Haggus - Plausibility of Putridity
One of the more genuinely disgusting album covers from this year's grind landslide. Very classick goregrind coming out of California. Carcass, Impetigo, Necrony, General Surgery, Exhumed and so on.
Gourmet - The Blast Supper
Super gnarly mincecore from Manitoba! Short and direct just like a good demo should be, with nasty feedback and brain-pummeling drums.
Goregonzola - Dick im Geschäft
More random ridickulous comedy grind, this time from Germany. These guys refer to their style as "cheese grind" and I don't think anymore needs to be said.
P.L.F. - Jackhammering Deathblow of Nightmarish Trepidation
Late 90's Texas legends still going strong and perpetuating the Brutal Truth/Terrorizer style of whirlwinds of violence grindcore. Very much for anybody who prefers no nonsense, no laughing, no grooving grindcore fury.
Botulist - Botulist
Straight up ferocity, a good mixture of grindcore and power violence with very rabid vocals.
China Ferarri Sex Orgy Death Crash - Atomic Vomit
Soupy mechanical cybergrind that sounds like a droid orgy. Mortician meets Last Days of Humanity meets Cock and Ball Torture. Utterly ridickulous, for connoisseurs only.
Skullsmasher - Cranial Emulsification
The definition of knuckle-dragging grindcore. Sounds like it was played by actual neanderthals.
Fake Meat - Botulism
Fake Meat again, his debut demo. More of the same as the first Fake Meat record I talked about, except this one is slightly less listenable and more grubby in general. A step down in almost every way but still cool.
Leadbelcher - All Glory to the Pantheon
Not great, but could be. The recording itself is very shitty (the opposite issue that most grind demos have, too quiet!) but the music has potential and so I decided to include it. Also, the band is Warhammer 40k-themed so that gave it a slight boost on my radar. Makes me wish there were more grind bands that played in the In Battle There Is No Law style.
Yeah I love them drums.
Hail to the snare gods.
Totally forgot to include this album. Utterly brutal goregrind/noisecore from Texas, think of the sheer brutality of Mortician meets the demented weirdness (especially in the vocals) of Macabre. Another band that's been going forever and still delivers, if not outright improves upon their earlier cult classick records.
Thought I'd riff a little on my favourite grinders from Portugal...
A goregrind band called Namek, what could go wrong? Some super duper snorting pig vocals with this one and some nice groove. They also incorporate some nice buzzsaw riffing. They recently reformed so hopefully we can get some more hentaicore soon.
This band isn't trying to reinvent the wheel, they're trying to stick it up their ass! If you like blasting, grinding comedy grindcore with insane and creative dual vocals (and weird use of clean vocals), catchy songwriting and funny samples you'll like these guys. They're part of the long tradition in grindcore of bands playing ultra-dumb parody and satire in pig-squealing pornogrind form. Still going very strong too, their new album should be out before the end of the year.
They also have some of the best art ever...
Their first album was mostly pretty forgettable, poorly recorded second-wave goregrind (still, I liked it enough) but their second offering Sublime Massacre Corpóreo from 2002 was a ferocious manifestation of what the band wanted to do two years prior but couldn't achieve due to their limitations as a band. Featuring some of the most slicing riffing and mincing drums ever, nice thick production that accentuates all the brutality and utterly brutal vocals, almost hard to believe it's the same band. For me, their best material to date.
After that they released a split, their side of it the same year was released on its own as an EP called Libido Dispareunia. For me this was a step down from their sophomore mostly because the way the drums were recorded sounds way too clicky for my tastes, but besides that it was clear they were heightening the insanity which lead to their third album Opusgenitalia, complete with a murky and sludgy production, aggressive drumming, menacing riffs and a very guttural vocal style.
Then, they went on a 6 year hiatus, returning in 2012 with a more streamlined, horror-soaked sound almost reminiscent of 2000's Necrophagia (if they played grindcore) and even did a video clip for a song off the album, called Gorefilia. Definitely riffier than any of their previous stuff, I was disappointed the year it came out but these days I appreciate it a lot, they changed things up in an interesting way. After that they released a cool EP with nothing but covers of classick deathgrind and goregrind songs (Carcass, Gut etc) and another EP the year after called Larvas with some new songs and some live tracks and random remixes. Musically it showed even more of a shift away from second-wave goregrind and more of a riff-based slightly technical brutal death metal.
Then, 4 years later in 2017, they FINALLY returned to their gore-soaked roots and released Catalépsia Necrótica: Gonorreia Visceral Reanimada, a re-recording of their first demo and first album. Unlike most bands who re-record old material, Holocausto Canibal actually did a service because as I said before, their first album was not exactly great stuff. This updates the material nicely, gives it a new gore-slicked sheen, a meaty sound and is actually worthy of its existence. It also proved that the band hadn't lost any of its ferocity and could actually still do what they used to do in their earliest days.
Hoping for a new release soon...
Formed by vocalist and scene legend Pedro "Aion" Pedra (Di.Soul.Ved, Nethermancy, Decayed...), their earliest demos are basically unlistenable slosh but in 1994 they finally released the EP 95 Stabwounds in Your Throat which was still pretty rough on the ears and amateurish but it displayed many demented elements they would go on to master, like groovy riffs, a heavy bass presence, dissonant drum patterns etc.
In 1996 they released their debut album Macabre Requiems, a total classick in my eyes of the 90's brutal deathgrind wave with ultra-catchy parts, high-pitched shrieks and cookie monster vocals, slicing Butchered at Birth influenced riffs (Cannibal Corpse were an influence in general I would guess), caveman skin-pounding... it's everything you would want in an old school brutal death metal/deathgrind record and then some!
After that they went silent for a few years, returning in 1999 with a killer promo tape called Regurgitape 99 which I've linked up there. It was a sloppily recorded glimpse into the new levels of brutality they were reaching in their downtime, featuring 20 minutes of guttural sickness reminiscent of shit like Tomb of the Mutilated or the Cannibal Corpse-worship bands soon to come into the scene like Severe Torture or who were already destroying the scene with their brutality like Mortem. This promo is still among their best material.
Two years later they finally recorded and released their sophomore Odes to the Carnivorous, their style was taken into new realms of disgusting blasting butchery hinted at on their 1999 promo. Musically they were also getting more proficient and technical, much like Cannibal Corpse did between Butchered at Birth and Tomb of the Mutilated. That is, not technical death metal by any means, but a slight step away from pure caveman brutality. For me this album marks the final release of their classic period.
They also went on hiatus for roughly ten years, returning in 2010 with a new 3-way slit and then in 2011 they released a new album called Scooping the Cranial Insides with an official video clip for a song on the album and a really weird album intro featuring indigenous didgeridoo playing and a maori haka spliced together (wtf?). This album is a nice mix of old school and new school brutal death metal, reflecting their old roots but updating many elements, especially with the drumming which is just vicious shit. By comparison it's a somewhat bland album that lacks any of the old charm they used to have but it's efficient and gets the job done.
Then, six years later in 2017, they released an album to rival their classic era shit called Ablutionary Rituals. Full of demented riffs, a sick tone, spine-snapping drums, over the top vocals that switch up disgustingly between guttural sickness and shrieking madness, creepy bass playing, a diversified pacing. This one feels like the logical conclusion from their late 90's material to me and it also once again steps up the songwriting and technical playing of the band.
I still miss the older grindier shit though, I wish they'd bring back some of that sound and mix it with this bassy brutal death metal...
Scalpels for Blind Surgeons, can't wait for this one.
This thread is seriously lacking when it comes to genuine PHOBIA.
GA has one of the best grind bands imo. Seen these guys more times than I can count.
Need I say more?
These guys are weirdos
Goregrind from Mark and Derek of Fake Meat infamy. This is pure soup.
2011 unreleased recording, sounds so fucking nasty. I love this band.
They're good. Seen them live a few times. I generally prefer my grind with a bass player though.
You heard this?
