    From MySpace:

Mainman Christofer Johnsson of the Swedish metallers THERION has issued the following updates:

    1) Snowy got his passport stolen in San Franciso (as some of you already know). He traveled to Japan with a temporary pass and managed to get a new Visa for Japan. While there he has now managed to sort out a new American Visa and has arrived safely to Denver airport and will be making it to the show in Engelwood in good time.

    2) Philadelphia show is now cancelled. There was this known issue with the promoter announcing the wrong date. It was too late to correct the date to the same venue, but we tried to book it into some other place instead. This didn't work, so today we received the final decision that Philadelphia is off the schedule. New York City and Springfield is in the near, so it shouldn't be a big deal for you guys in this area to catch up with any (or why not both?) shows over there.

    3) The Detroit show was never any regular THERION show. Instead of having a day off we would be playing before TYPE O NEGATIVE, before their opening acts, and play some 30 min set or what ever. Due to what ever reasons, this won't be happening now and we'll have a day off and drive to the Niagara Falls instead.

    4) The tour we did in 2005 was not very successful due to us being overbooked with shows in areas where we don't do too well (which I pointed out before the tour, but I was talked into doing it) plus the fact that our tour bus broke down and we lost a bunch of shows.

This time we tried a new concept (with a more professional American booking agent) and do only shows in areas where we do OK or good. We've had fun shows so far, but economically it isn't working this way either, the initial costs (work permit, visa, flights etc) are spread over too few shows and the budget was on the limit already when being planned. As unexpected costs always tend to pop out, the tour will now have a bit of minus and thus also this concept turned out to be not working. This means that unless the tooth fairy decides to sponsor us or some festival decides to pay us sick amounts of money to bring us over and carry the massive costs, this will likely be your last opportunity to see the band perform in USA/Canada. This decision is also pushed by the fact that we are becoming more and more of a show band and we don't play many venues over here in a size where the European production would fit. Starting from the next World Tour 2010, we want to standardize things and have an identical stage set up no matter where we play in the world."

This makes me even more depressed I can't make the NYC show :(
Though considering I figured they wouldn't have another US tour after the last one, it's not really all that surprising.

Unfortunate, to say the least. Glad I'll be seeing them in Chicago soon. Perhaps time to consider streamlining the stage production a bit to curtail some of the tour costs.

It sounds like they already do compared to their European tour which they don't want to do in the future. There's not much more they can besides dropping a bunch of singers. I can't imagine a Therion show with only 1 or maybe 2 singers. It's one of the main reasons Epica bugs me. They have so much tracked and I don't want Therion to resort to anymore than they already do.

A real shame, this band gives everything they have live, but it seems things just aren't destined to work out for them here. Hopefully they can be brought back for a future Progpower engagement in a few years.

:erk: *sigh* unfortunately I cannot see Glenn's budget allowing 'sick amounts of money' or 'carrying the costs' completely. And I don't even think a standard sponsorship would help much.

ah well... I always wanted to take my wife to Germany. Perhaps someday I can tie that in with a Therion tour date. :saint:

I have seen therion in europe..

The usa shows are VERY stripped down (no props, minimum required musicians). Bummer I wish they were more popular in the states as they always put on a fantastic show.

    ill be in chiacgo too.

now im even more pissed that the Atlanta show mysteriously disappeared...

this is ridiculous....understandable if somethings not economically feasible than you cant do it but they should at least announce this and THEN book a decent North American tour hitting the major markets so people will have a last chance to see them...not announce it halfway through the tour that doesnt even hit every region with only a handful of dates left and no time for people to make travel arrangements......BOOOOO!

guess i'll have to make some european travel plans...

    What sad news.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to see them the year they were at Progpower...

They may have to do what Blackfield did when they came to the States. They were only in huge cities like DC, NYC, LA - I don't even know if they went to Chicago actually??????

It will be 2010 before I have a shot at them because once they finish this world tour, they are done until then.

Wow, thats kind of shitty of Therion. The vibe I get from that is "meh, this sucks, we hate it here. later!" ... Maybe if their more professional booking agent had booked more shows they'd do better, but, thats OK, because the crowds and venues here aren't big enough anyway, and they ARE a show band.

I hate to say it, but they sound like whiny little diva's here. I understand the point of a tour isn't to lose money, and I also understand that a poorly managed tour can be a giant bitch, but you know, have a little professionalism.

They obviously don't like it here. I say good riddance.

Glad I'm seeing them next week. However, this really does highlight one of the issues that many of our favorite bands have: It's damn expensive to tour in the U.S.

I didn't get that tone from that blurb up above. It just sounded like he's aware of the fact that they aren't a huge draw in the US, and can't really pull off the kind of shows they want to do because they are booked in smaller venues.

That's what I got, too. Unlike certain other bands I could mention, Therion seem to simply be being honest about not being able to lose money touring the U.S., and aren't willing to strip down any more than they already have to do so. I can understand that.

maybe the fact that they arent willing to 'strip down anymore' is the reason for people not knowing them
