Me aged 15 on the right mouthbreathing on account of being at one of the world's smelliest tourist 'attractions'. The gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers. Basically just a great big field of guano. I highly recommend not going there.

Gannets are more closely related to boobies, shags and even penguins. Quite different to a gull. Just some sort of wonder of nature since they nest (& shit) together like that in such huge numbers. It's the largest colony of the particular species that's on mainland as opposed to an island, having gradually grown to about 20,000 birds over the course of 170 years.

 

Took a short weekend trip to Monterey, CA a few weekends back. Drove down the coastal highway to see some Redwoods in Big Sur.
