I dont know how well this is going to come off to be honest. Horror Show was a cool concept. But I dunno about this one really. How awesome can it be to sing about The Red Baron?

Well, Iron Maiden had no trouble singing about historical subjects...some of them are their best songs..."The Trooper" and "2 Minutes to Midnight" for example.

I think Iced Earth will handle it well.

Well, when I first heard the concept of Horrow Show when it was in the works, I thought it sounded cool, but I thought it would come out being pretty darn cheesey. When it came out I was more than pleasantly suprised. I am guessing the same thing may happen with TGB. On the one hand, the concept sounds kind of cheesey and such, but on the other I think some of the material will make for great themes, and with Jon at the helm you can guarantee it won't suck.

I'm into history, especially U.S. history, so I'm pretty sure I'll dig 'The Glorius Burden'. Of course, I know I will have liked it more if Matt was on vocals. Anything that Iced Earth releases in the future, I'll always wonder what it would've sounded like if Matt was singing instead. I won't be able to help that.

I dont liek the fact Jon is gonna write concept stuff until the next Wicked album. Its like he's saving material and that just bothers me. I think he needs to get back into the hating religion mode and pump out another hateful album like Burnt Offerings. I dunno. I just dont think the direction IE is heding is one that will keep alot of older fans happy.

I don't look at it as Jon saving material (even though he is I am sure), but as he said in interviews, he just wants to put out an album of more individual songs, and stuff he wants to write personally, before tackling more conceptual stuff.

I look damn forward to hearing the Wicked album, after hearing that Jon has picked up heaps of tribal instruments and such to use on it. Sounds very interesting.

Well think of it this way, Slayer write songs about war and they have no trouble keeping up the heaviness/speed etc. Its all how you approach the subject :)

I have good hopes about this album. Iced Earth hasn't disappointed me yet. And I kind of like the concept.

Iced Earth won't exactly tackle war history the way that Slayer does....War Ensemble and Expendable Youth are pretty damn far from a song about The Red Baron (doesn't matter what it's like,it's still fucking far).
Kinda weird to make a comparison like that.
But I still hope it'll be good...

You dont know that they are. Have you heard it? Just because the topic is about The Red Baron doesnt mean it will suck. It might be the heaviest song Iced Earth has ever done.

Okay, here's my case against the Glorious Burden as devil's advocate again:

Jon has a very patriotic, pro-American attitude. Thus, songs about American history will likely be more focused on the "USA!" angle, and so either positive or mournful. It is highly unlikely that songs about a topic Jon has such an opinion towards will take an angry tone. No anger = less thrashy = not what I like. It's a personal thing.

However, without Matt's considerable vocal skills to draw upon, the songwriting could be forced to change and rely more upon the riffs, which is what made Iced Earth great in the first place. Again, a personal thing.

The songwriting is done for it though, everythings recorded etc. They just need to redo the vocals...

Exactly its gonna be all about pride and that good stuff and thats cool. More power to him for doing an album about what he loves and believes in. But are the fans going to share that view? I seriously doubt it. Specially non american fans.

As for Red Baron being the heaviest thing IE have ever done. I seriously doubt that will happen. The Baron was all about stealth so the song wont be right in your face.

It might be fast as hell. Take Aces High for example.

    Hi, you guys!
    I´ve got one question:

What is wrong with the Red Baron?

I don´t know how many of you people are into German history, but I am a German history student, so I think I can utter my opinion here:

I think the idea of making a song about the Red Baron is great!
First of all it´s a cool idea, because it is a non-american character. I think the European fans (and Iced Earth HAS the most fans in Europe, I suppose) will get into the concept a lot better, when there are also European themes on the record. Sorry, but an opus about Gettysburg might be extremely interesting for American fans, but if there is only American history on the album, the European fans might not get into it so well. (Even though American history is not about half as long as the European, so "old Europe" would have much more to tell)

The next thing is: Who said that a song about the Red Baron cannot be "in your face"?
The Red Baron was a fighter pilot in WWI, who was famous for his honour and fairness even among the British and French troops. So, if there is a song about honour, pride, glory(what you guys seem to like) etc. then it is about the Red Baron.
Not to get into the wrong direction: I am a pacifist and I am usually not the one to celebrate war heroes or other things like that.

I think we must decide about what theme is good or not, when we have heard the album, the music is most important.

And one word about Slayer: I like Slayer´s music very much, but I think the way they do lyrics about war or similar themes is crap!
Especially Angel Of Death is extremely sick! They write about Concentration Camps and Holocaust in an extremely unsensitive and provocative way, which I cannot support! Millions of people were killed and the cruelty was unimaginable. This is the darkest chapter in our German history and I don´t think I need a comment like this from Slayer about this subject.

The thing is: Why shouldn´t Iced Earth do a song about the Red Baron who stands for all those things like honour and glory?

Here here. Though I think Angel Of Death is awesome, and I don't see any problem writing about such things. They are not promoting ans such and if anything, they are telling just how gruesome it was.
