Usually the ones written by users on Metal Archives.
I think Erik Thomas (Digital Metal, Metal Review) is reputable. John Chedsey (SSMT) is always good for a laugh.
check out UltraBoris' reviews
There's 10 or 15 users on M-A who're usually spot on.
There's a couple horrendous reviewers on Metal-Archives aswell. The worst of the bunch is a moron who posts the reviews he writes for his shitzine "Metal Crypt". Goes by the name of "Requiem99". Go read his review for Buried into Oblivion and you'll see why.
This may sound redundant. But shadowofdeath is another horrible reviewer. Everyone else's opinion I take with some consideration.
Oh, and Sacraphobic.
I don't really know or follow specific reviewers on M-A. I just read a bunch of reviews, and figure out what the general thing about the albums is. Like what it sounds like....or if it's a love/hate album or something. If I think it warrants a listen...I'll listen to a song from it.
Hahahahah, I'm so sick of that guy. I have to accept his reviews because they're technically well-written and follow the guidelines, but I hate reading them. Honestly, they wouldn't bother me so much if he wasn't so convinced that he was the best reviewer ever.
UltraBoris is good on stuff he likes (apart from Hammerfail); it's generally on the negative reviews that we diverge. I know him well enough to figure out whether I'll like something he likes or not.
GrimAndFrostbitten and Abominatrix are both awesome reviewers. OSheaman, when he's not fellating homosexual flower metal, is generally good, and Snxke's longer reviews (instead of just the random paragraph-long blurbs) are quite useful. Uh, Nightgaunt and Crazpete are awesome when it comes to black & death metal. And of course, my reviews rock (damn you GoD for beating me to it.)
Apart from that site, while Andrew from www.metal-reviews.com doesn't exactly write the world's most descriptive reviews, I found his recommendations (Overkill, Nevermore, Testament) extremely useful in my formative years. Great for people just getting into metal.
Ultraboris knows his thrash, speed and power metal. I usually trust his reviews. It's really only his Testament reviews i disagree on, but other than that, he's usually useful.
none. i follow my own instinct and what i like. its the same with movies, the critics are way off and give the 4 star movies to all the same drama over hyped shit. if someone gives me a band to try out. ill be inclined to do so and rate it from there
Um...myself, I hope.
most reviewers suck. i prefer to download & try by myself though p2p. i could really give two shits what some schmoe i never met says about an album
M-A suffers a bit because a lot of people tend to only review albums they really like. The percentage numbers are garbage and...whatever, there have been threads on this before. As far as reviews go, that's generally where i go first, and then try to filter out the crap reviews and put a decent idea together.
I trust the recommendations/reviews of people here as much as from M-A. It's easier to sort out who has tastes similar to yours.
It depends on the reviewer and the genre. I do read a lot of reviews at the metal-archives. I trust UltraBoris' reviews for thrash and power metal, but not black or death metal, as the latter two are not genres he generally likes. For black metal and death metal, Falconsbane, Scorpio, The_Ghost_of_Room237, langstondrive, christkiller, etc.
I find all reviewers to have ups and downs. John Chedsy is good most of the time, and when his site was still alive James 'Harry' Hinchcliffe was (and still is for Terrorizer) very clued up about black metal.
As far as M-A goes I find HowDisgusting's taste falls very close to my own, and his reviews are always very good. Abominatrix, Vic, Crazpete and Snxke all know what they're talking about and Boris can usually work up a reader's enthusiasm for the albums he likes, though his reviews are generally pretty awful. All the other people GoD mentioned are good writers, though I mostly disagree with their opinions.
Ghost Of Room 237 and Abominatrix.
