I was just wondering, being relatively new to the whole 'melodic death metal' scene (I find traditional death metal.....well.....not melodic enough, ironically, lol!) what other bands come close to the amazing talent that is DT?
I first heard DT in 2000 when a friend let me listen Haven, they were the first of the genre I had heard - before then I'd been into stuff like Ill Nino, Disturbed, Deftones, Incubus, a lot of relatively 'mainstream' metal.

Since then I've been scouting around for bands that have a similar approach to DT, but they all seem to pale in comparison....

Soilwork: OK vocals, nice attempts at clean singing in the choruses of the new album...doesn't seem to be as much emotion in the growling though...even so...listenable.

In Flames: Just downloaded half of Reroute To Remain....yikes....having heard Clayman I was hoping for something good...I heard 'Cloud Connected' first.....promising beginning....more melody in some of the vocals.....it all seemed to just pass me by though.....yawn......?

Amaran: I like the sound of this band.....I like the songs I've been able to download anyway. I'm looking to get the album. Still not as good as DT though, even though it's hard to compare.

Shadows Fall: Not too keen from what I've heard.....just seems a bit bland.....maybe I'm wrong.

Can anybody recommend any bands *WITH LINKS* that I could listen to?

Thanks, I don't even know why I'm posting this, I guess I'm just having a blitz on finding out about new music. I'm getting into the whole emo/hardcore scene at the moment too, as well as stuff I can't even classify....
Breaking Benjamin, Trapt, The Used, The Blank Theory, Mad at gravity, Vacant Stare, Spiritfall, Shun, Sunset Black.....

Yeah well thanks for any recommendations - unsigned as well as signed.......

I think you should isten to osme older In Flames, The Jester Race and Whoracle before you condem them.

ShadowsFall is very cool, I like them alot, give them more of a chance.

Um I cant recomend anything, then I'd have to go looking for links :p.

I don't have a link for them atm, but Embraced - more keyboard heavy, but still brilliant. If anyone does have a link for these dudes.

I'd also recommend Detonation... theres another couple of links I have to get.

    http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/344/phallicide.html
Phallicide - British band, from Bristol. Not bad.

Not completing, but still in the same sorta vein and nice to listen to.

Embraced sadly have split up, but their site is still online at listen.to/embraced. There are some lofi samples/songs available there.

@solefald, Embraced Black Metal??! I wouldn't call it that, though I must confess some parts tend to sound a bit like CoF sometimes, mostly because of the singer and the use of keyboards. Within is a great album, but so is Amorous Anathema...

I've been looking for Amorous Anathema for ages without success.
I even asked Michael Håkansson's girlfriend who could only confirm that it's hard as hell to find.

As for recommendations, you'll find that the fellows in Theory in Practice display a technical proficiency even more amazing than that of Dark Tranquillity. They aren't as melodic however.

Borknagar121 recommended Julie Laughs Nomore, here's a link
Get From the Mist of the Ruins.

    Thanks for the links everybody.
I checked out Julie Laughs Nomore......interesting...but I felt there was a bit to much cheese in the lyrics...Power metal cheese!
It reminds me of when I listened some power metal like Hammerfall...."Where the dragon lies bleeding" and all that crap....
The only power(ish) metal I like is Nightwish....

Anyway, I'll check out some more of the links.

Skyfire are kinda close to Embraced in ways...

You talk about Embraced? Yeah, it's sad they split up after 2 such great albums, their singer is now completely off Metal :)() and plays in a rock 'n roll band called Burning Engines.

One of their keyboardplayers (Sven Karlsson) has joined Soilwork as a permanent keyboardplayer, he appears on Natural Born Chaos. The other keyboardplayer (Julius Chmielewski) was in Misteltein (Black Metal, they're on No Fashion) and as far as I know they're still going.

Eucharist is better than Dark Tranquillity.

Other than that only At The Gates begins to compare. The rest of them suck... More or less.
