I would also agree with him on an 8/10 rating for that album, which was a bit higher than at first listen. For me, a 10/10 doesn't have to literally be perfect, but more so perfect in achieving the best possible album in regards to my particular tastes. Few have done it, but I don't think its impossible. There are even a few albums I would score 100/100. So while I don't mind a band like Children of Bodom, I can honestly say in my lifetime I will never give an album of theirs a 10/10.
There aren't any flaws per se... it's actually a very consistent album. But there isn't anything on it that is really great either. I.E. there are no tracks of the magnitude of say "Spellbound", "In Death's Embrace", "Reptile", "The Insight & the Catharsis", etc. Just a very good and solid album. Not breathtaking.
I really don't Know if Paradise Lost - Gothic is a perfect 10, but this album brings me back a lot of good memories from the late 80's early 90's.

Right now my 10/10s go to Amon Amarth - The Crusher Amon Amarth - Avenger Amon Amarth - With Oden On Our Side Amon Amarth - Versus The World Sonata Arctica - Silence (my favorite album currently) Shadow Gallery - Tyranny Pig Destroyer - Prowler In The Yard Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor Blind Guardian - A Night At The Opera Kreator - Coma Of Souls Novembre - Materia Negura Bunget - OM Weakling - Dead As Dreams Moonspell - Sin/Pecado Metal Church - Metal Church and Dissection - The Somberlain
while i will agree that it isn't breathtaking it is an exellent album, and in my book it does make a 10 of 10. i dunno...maybe i'm just easy to get a good rating from. or maybe i just like their style. antother album i'd like to take a liitle to to talk about is Six Feet Under's latest, Commandment. although i have been throughly enjoying it, i felt it really left something to be desired. may of the guitar lines felt oversimplfyed, just not like the past albums. i'd probably rate it around about a 6.5 or 7, decent heavy album, just doesn't live up to something like 13 or true carnage.

Personally I love everything about their first album. The raw-ish production, atmosphere, the hideously awesome vocals, the beautiful instrumentals, and my personal favourite the keyboards/organ. It has a great night-time feel to it, and a sincere quality in it. A Dream of Wolves in the Snow, Of Mist and Midnight Skies are some of their best songs in my opinion.

Same here. The only thing about Children of Bodom that I've ever found appealing is Alexei Leiho's guitar playing. Their keyboard melodies are silly, the drumming is uninventive, the bass is almost in audible, and the lyrics are beyond silly. I won't deny his talent, but it would be best put to use by someone with taste.
