After having heard both albums really, really often and intensive, I prefer Universe a lot.

Quantum is rockin + Holdsworth is on it...and i prefer Garsed to MacAlpine.

T-Mac's best work is by far on CAB2 and CAB4.....i still have a soft spot for Maximum Security as it was one of the first shred albums i bought though.

Surprised nobody has mentioned any of Rudess's albums.

I have to listen to Quantum first, but I'm sure it will be awesome.
Cab2 is great, but I'm a bit annoyed by the repetitive structure.
Give Universe a lot of time and it will really grow on you.

There are too many to list. I agree with the Yanni, though I like Tribute better. And MacAlpine has to be on there as well. Maximum Security was just awesome when it was released, and it stood well the test of time. And YJM's Rising Force, though there are two vox tracks, would have to be my all-time #1 since it so changed the face of electric guitar back in the '80's. And Bitches Brew is up there as well for its profound impact on everything music. And Vinnie Moore's Mind's Eye caused a huge stink when it came out as well. I guess that makes me at five, huh?

So, in summary, I'll try to actually rank them:

2. Miles Davis, Bitches Brew
3. Tony MacAlpine, Maximum Security
4. Vinnie Moore, Mind's Eye
