Obituary

I plan on getting this and that soon and this an that, but who knows. I could get something else that is not 'that' and said/thought I was getting that and it's not that.

Or you could stop being an utter fag and start liking Obituary. I seriously don't understand people who can tolerate the vocals of Chuck Schuldiner or Martin Van Drunen but have a problem with John Tardy's vocals. His vocals are definitely a little more ridiculous sounding but it's certainly in the same vein as the aforementioned vocalists.

I am just bothered by people saying his vocals are "the sickest ever!!1!!"...I often wonder if these people have heard Effigy of the Forgotten or if they're just being retarded.

Frank Mullen doesn't have much of a range so I'm not really sure what you're talking about there. John Tardy is far from the "sickest" vocalist ever but he is definitely pretty erratic.

I don't mind the vocals and me not liking them has really nothing to do with the vocals and simply find the band really boring and unimaginative. I like something or do not like something and it is simple as that and there is nothing more to why someone likes a band or not.

I wasn't entirely serious, but still. You can listen to dozens of generic Swedish death metal albums (which is by no means bad) but you can't listen to Obituary?

Just...fucking stop lambasting people because they don't like something or do like something. It's stupid and achieves nothing except mutual distaste. This goes for everyone...stop.

I think this probably stems back from the days when the vocals were very extreme - remembering of course that Obituary, as a first wave of death metal band did release Slowly We Rot waaaaay back in'89, when there wasn't a whole lot of extreme vocals to compare them against.

I (being older than time) can remember thinking the vocals were utterly inhuman and extreme.

Oh, and to the thread: Cause of Death gets my vote.

Cause of Death and Slowly we Rot are the classics... but I cant shake the fact that I like World Demise better than both of them.

Exactly! I still think they are extreme to this day, just in a different fashion but thats whats good about the early days, nothing was set in stone.

...I think it's a real shame that more bands weren't influenced by them. Sure, you can (logically enough) find a similar style in some Six Feet Under and Lowbrow, but other than that, I don't hear a lot of Obituary influence at all.

Call me a stupid old bastard if you like, but I'd much rather hear atmospheric, mid-paced death metal than br00tal or tech-death.

I definitely agree. My band made that a must. Mid-paced heavy death metal. Being old don't matter. I can't even drink legally yet. I really enjoy some freakin groove in death metal (not groove metal necessarily).
