best viking metal album of Bathory

I picked Hammerheart myself though I also like Nordland II ... and now since everyone else recommends it I might get Twilight as well... albums i have so far:

I voted blood on ice because the story and theme is played out so well you think your the warrior taking part in the albums journey, and hearing him scream YEAHHHHHH after one eyed old mans speach is a funny, fist raising experience.

The most voted Hammerheart does go more in depth with it's epic emotion, but i'll stay with BOI for now

Haha, that part is indeed awesome.

If Blood on Ice had more songs like "The Stallion", "The Woodwoman", and "The Lake", it would easily be my favorite. I guess I can't blame the album for being all concept-ish, but I don't think the concept boosts the musical quality a whole lot.

"The Lake" is an incredible song. I really love the story behind it - of a guy sacrificing his eyes to a mystical lake so deep that the bottom of it connects with the heavens, and that doing this gives him omnipresent eyesight. Just thinking about the idea gives me chills. And the accompanying music, with the hollow-voiced chorus and all, just makes it all the more chilling!

Just shows how much of a difference it makes in the epic quality of a song when the band can actually write lyrics as powerful as the music. This is pretty rare in epic metal as a whole, I'd say.

That song is indeed incredible----I really wish I had that Cd here with me. I think i'll download it onto this computer I really feel like listening to it. That and Hammerheart.

Well to those that don't know what it is about, a guy singing about his eyes being thrown in the lake might seem odd, and when people don't understand something they use laughter as their first response because in the present age it is easier to laugh at something then to try and describe what is being experienced because we fear that the protagonist is merely playing a joke to see what we say.

I hate how this notion is now a common act, for intellectual discussions on subjects no longer take place in substitute for "having a laugh" and it leaves everyone less the wiser.

I also hate that every second word can be connected to a sexual act, it was funny pointing out a common sentence like "me and john are going to my place now" could be linked to a laugh about the two being gay.
But now it is far from funny half the time, overused to the shithouse, and rant rant rant

Maybe i'm getting to old, and maybe this should be in the hate thread, but Susperia's post set me off.

Most people give nary a shit about anything philosophical or metaphysical. It's useless trying to explain something like Bathory to people who concern themselves mainly with partyin', chillin', and avoiding anything that forces them to use their imagination. They'd laugh off Bathory as quickly as any other great mind.

Your exactly right. I'm not really one to delve deeply in such things, but i will try to understand them before passing them off as something i don't care for, ect.
Sometimes i envy the people you describe because, through arrogance, they are like innocent children, not knowing anything just having fun, but then i always realise that later on in life these people will have nothing of essence to be proud of, no one goes down in history for getting drunk and tapping ass... unless your a pornstar ala john holmes and you die of having a big dick with aids.

Well, the drive to have fun is natural to everyone; some people just rely on it more heavily than others. I consider it more admirable to spend a significant portion of one's life thinking about the fundamentals, appreciating art, and making one's own contribution to the body of art and philosophy in the world, however adept or deficient at such things one may be. In my own life, I'm not particularly worried about where the balance falls between taking life seriously and simply fucking off, but the important thing to me is to be conscious of the need for that balance.

Very well put. Balance! I am making out i'm this stern ex army mans son who despises emotion. I am very immature when it comes to being "funny" and i am known mostly for being "that guy that is funny" but i also have a withdrawn serious side, morals mean a lot to me and questioning lifes meaning plays a big part on my decisions.

I find it hard to understand how, some people, a lot of people, have that need to be doing something fun all the time, have that need to be around people all the time.

One can't achieve with distractions such as other people who aren't contributing to their goals, thats why i like to have a good balance of being social and being alone, so i can remain happy and get what i need/want done, actually done.

Ah, yeah. My friends or other people are always scared by death metal and such, but they always laugh, smirk, etc., when I put on a lot of black or viking/folk/whatever metal. Unless it is pretty dark and sinister, they usually laugh at mostly the vocals.
