some time ago there was a heated debate about the introduction of starbucks in italy. all the no-global activists were screaming in horror at this americanization of the world, and of course people were insulting each other on newspapers and on tv. i was surprised at the constant overlooking of the one obvious factor: nobody in italy would be so stupid as to stop for coffee at starbucks, given the alternatives. it was just a ridiculous idea.
