Favorites of 2005

Hey, glad to see Ed and everybody are still posting regularly. Have not made it on here in a while. Can't wait for the next Enchant album.

2005 was more of a year for me discovering great 2004 albums for some reason, though I had a few favorites:
System of a Down - Hypnotize/Mezmerize (big surprise, these guys really grow on you!)
King's X - Ogre Tones
Evergrey - A Night to Remember
Disturbed - 10,000 Fists

The great 2004 albums I found in 2005 were:
Sylvan - X-Rayed (Found these guys at Rosfest and loved them.. songwriting, musicianship, vocals are all great. By the way, Rosfest would be a cool venue for Enchant)
Evergrey - The Inner Circle (Didn't really get these guys until this album, now love all their stuff)
Tears for Fears - Everybody Loves a Happy Ending (great album)
Keane - Hopes and Fears (Wow, I like a band that was actually on the radio!)

Update...Just because...

10,000 Fists has faded away. I guess, with it's inflection towards pop-dom, it's not all that memorable.

The Fullness Of Time is in constant rotation. It's what a good CD should be: always fresh, with something new to be heard. Excellent stuff.

I'm not sure if it was an '05 or '04 release, but I just got Nightwish's "Once" and it's a damn good release. I'm not sure about their back catalog, though (or their future, with the nasty departure of female vox Tarja Turunen).

Sure thing..sorry it's been a few weeks..I go through phases on this forum..sometimes I'm here a lot..then I'll not have time/forget to come back for a few weeks.

Klimt 1918 - DOPOGUERRA

Great melodic..Catchy 80's New Wave/Prog Metal I suppose. The whole album flows perfectly. One comparison was Katatonia but liter..hmm..maybe in some ways. I'd take a listen http://www.myspace.com'klimt1918 and thankfully The End Records has this guy for a reasonable price. back in December when I got it, the best price was ebay for $18..Amazon it was like $35.

Of The Hour - ENTROPY

hmm..Alternative with ProgRock tendencies without the long phrasings and tons of technical parts that ProgRock often has. Like Klimt and some others..the Dredg fans forum introduced me to these guys. http://www.myspace.com/ofthehour

Aviatic - ARRIVAL

Great..catchy, piano-driven rock. Not sure how else to describe it..maybe like Elton John but a little proggier. http://www.myspace.com/aviatic

Oceansize - EVERYONE INTO POSITION

Great, heavy, layered disc. They hint at a lot of influences..industrial and psychadelic esp. Some of this reminds me of Pain of Salvation actually. Veryover the top emotional vocals. The fact they opened for Porcupine Tree and toured with Pure Reason Revolution doesn't hurt in my case. I actually recently have acquired their last album too, EFFLORESCE and am diggin g that a lot too.

Kaddisfly - BUY OUR INTENTION, WE'LL BUY YOU A UNICORN

This is like a marathon of subtle proggy moments with Modern Rock writing style I guess. I find that this album there are tons of different kinds of songs..some ballads..some heavier..some more ambient..they add certain parts..vocal-styles. The vocals might remind you at times of Incubus. One Dredg fan had this as his album of the year so I figd I'd give it a shot..glad I did. http://www.myspace.com/kaddisfly

Mute Math - RESET EP

This band are awesome!..this EP..is almost too short..the 1st 2 tracks totally get you groovin. If you get the chance to see MuteMath live..DON'T MISS THEM. Lovin this band. Singer= like STing from his Police days. Spacey..ambient..rockin..drummer is very tight. Check them out on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mutemath Their Self-titled full length that came out earlier this year is more of the same..better in some ways..great great stuff.

Matisyahu - LIVE AT STUBBS

Great live album. Reggae-Hip Hop-Metal..sort of..very unique blend of styles. KING WITHOUT A CROWN is my favorite track.

Solarcade - ALIENS AND ANGELS

spacey guitars..next to nobody knows this band, I only do since they approached me on myspace. Singer is not like too many..maybe a tad like the singer from The Tea Party. http://www.myspace.com/solarcade

I'll have to go with Redemption: The Fullness of Time, Zero Hour: A Fragile Mind, Prince: Musicology... damn, this is bad, I can't remember HALF the CD's I bought in 2005. I know it's been a slow year, but they're escaping me. Suffice to say, none are as obscure (to me) as many of the ones aforementioned....

Oh yeah, though... Coldplay is still on my "To Get" list, everything I've heard from it sounds great.

yeah, Mute Math are awesome. I'm seeing them again in concert on Thursday in fact.

Another release I just discovered is this band called "The Receiving End Of Sirens" http://www.myspace.com/thereceivingendofsirens their 2005 LP BETWEEN THE HEART AND THE SYNAPSE I have been listening to the last couple of days. These guys are similar to Coheed And Cambria, but they do some great things with layering and vocals. If you can take a bit of the Screamo-vocals..you may love them. But I can see a lot of people not being able to. Kaddisfly was a little bit similar for me..but unlike a band like Mew or Circa Survive..there is more diversity and depth to their vocals. This band may be the most successful and mixing Punk and Prog..they have some of the catchiest melodies I've ever heard..not unlike Coheed or The Mars Volta.

i love mew...

i randomly discovered The Receiving End of Sirens a few weeks ago... it's good... but I still don't know how much I like it... I'll have to give it some more listens...

I also need to give Coheed some more listens... I've been liking their sound more and more

Mew I was stoked to check out after loving the samples i heard. But every song, the vocals sounded so High..like Enya..and I could be ok with that for 1 or 2 songs, but it was something I couldn't listen to for a whole album.

But a lot of the Pure Reason Revolution fans and Porcupine Tree fans are into them..so I may be in the minority.
