Kansas for ProgPower

I have never seen Kansas mentioned EVER in all the threads on this forum as a candidate for PP. It kinda flies under the radar that they were a huge part of the formation of the Prog-rock genre as a whole, not to mention their influence on power metal (rarely acknowledged but painfully obvious upon listening). I saw them perform recently and they were incredible, a really top notch, tight, beautifully presented show. Anyone else think Kansas would be an extremely cool PP headliner?

I agree that they put on a great show. I saw them a couple years back and it was awesome. I almost think though that if you put Kansas up for progpower then Journey, Rush, Yes and the like should be up as well.

Great band, would love to see them.

But... you put Kansas, or any band of their magnitude on PP and you'll have to deal with a cross-over audience that will make it virtually impossible for many PP-regulars to even get tickets. Not to mention a bunch of fans there to see Kansas who couldn't give a crap about any of the other bands, if Glenn could even afford any other bands after booking them. Wonder what they cost these days?

Check their tour dates/stops.... they don't sell too many tickets anymore. I doubt they cost more than $3k.

I don't have a problem with the band personally, but I don't think they fit what's going on at ProgPower. Granted, they've influenced the genre, but this festival is aimed at bands that get no or very little exposure here in the states. At least that's how I look at the PP festival as a whole.

Love some of their music, but I was bored to tears during both times I saw the band (coincidently opening for Styx both times). They're old and boring performers when it comes to a live setting.

You can see them every year at your local casino.
I would have loved to have seen Saga with Michael Sadler 1 more time(he is leaving teh band for a while to be with his family),might actually go to Canada to see their last show with him

Kansas is legendary, that much is certain. A few of their albums are in my Top 20 list (i.e., Masque, Song For America, Leftoverture). I absolutely loved that band in the '70s.

Musically, they're still just as tight as they always were.

Vocally, however...

Steve Walsh used to have one of the most distinctive and laudable voices in rock. Today, though, he's reduced to a raspy, thin growl. Granted, I haven't seen them in 4-5 years. But I saw them a lot in the '90s (one time at this dive of a dance club in St. Louis; it was embarrassing) and Steve's voice was pretty far gone. Unless a miracle occurred since then, it's still gone.

Without Kerry Livgren, Robby Steinhardt, and Steve Walsh's soaring vocals, it's just not Kansas any more.

I pretty much agree with the 'They are legends, but not really a great fit for PP' crowd. Heck, if Glenn were going to book Kansas, he could book Blue Oyster Cult, and then we could all bring cowbells!

BOC would be way too expensive, BTW, since they don't tour. They fly to all their shows, which are almost all one-offs nowadays. That said, they're still quite good live, even if they never play "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" or "Black Blade."

BOC doesn't tour anymore? Man, when I was back East, I swear that was all they did. Seems like some years, you could see them at the same club a couple of times.

I do really like Kansas, have for many, many years, but I don't think they are right for PP. Plus, I've seen them so many times in the past. Honestly, I've actually lost count. More of that old age creeping in I guess.

BOC is always touring the east coast. All year round it seems. I saw them do "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" back in 1998. It was amazing and my all time fave BOC ditty after "Harvest Moon".

Oh, they play out, but they don't tour (with a tour-bus, etc.) AFAIK, all their gigs nowadays are one-offs....fly-in fly-out. Still, they stay fairly busy, typically playing festivals and such.

I last saw "Veteran" and "Black Blade" performed at Dragon*Con many years ago, one of the two years Eric Bloom was a special guest. Mike Moorcock, too. I'm still good friends with both.


Okay, so....Kansas, BOC and Dixie Dregs for PPUSA?

I love Kansas, I've seen them several times, and I would love to see them again; however, I agree that it might not be the best fit for ProgPower. Maybe if you flew in Kerry Livgren, and they performed some sort of special set (performed a particular album in it's entirety, etc.) then maybe that would work, but I would still be concerned that a lot of people would walk out on them.

I would, however, like to see Seventh Key at ProgPower sometime; I really like the "Live in Atlanta" DVD. I don't even know if they'd be appropriate for ProgPower, but I would definitely love to see them...

Okay, so....Kansas, BOC and Dixie Dregs for PPUSA?

If Steve Morse is going to be there, why not add Deep Purple (we can dream, right)? I'm watching their '06 concert at Montreaux Jazz Fest on DVD right now. Killer concert, and quite progessive at times. Highly recommended.



P.S. Watched the BOC A Long Day's Night DVD a couple nights ago, had to settle for Burning For You and Lips In The Hills instead of Veteran and Black Blade.
