Saille - Irreversible Decay (Code666 Records 2011).
Estremamente affascinanti! (Francesco Scarci)

Though the genre arguably has lulled for the better part of the past decade, symphonic-metal creators and consumers alike have welcomed any possible heirs to Emperors long-abdicated throne. With Irreversible Decay, Belgian five-piece (nine-piece, if you count the in-studio classical personnel) Saille throws its hat into the ring by way of nine tracks that are mostly symphonic in intention, even if not always in execution, and definitely leaning more towards the black metal part of the label.
Coupling moments of nominal tastefulness (the acoustic guitar fueling intro track Nomen, the quasi-classical breakdown in Maere) with wider expanses of muddied percussion and thrashing guitars, Irreversible Decay quickly reveals itself firmly planted in the genres time-honored blueprint. Cellos and violins float over acoustic guitars but only over the acoustic guitars. Saille respects its ambitions but also very blatantly segregates them from each other, resulting in music that constantly sounds as though its hedging its bets.
This stylistic isolation and, at times, predictable changing of gears ultimately makes the 63 minutes of Irreversible feel a lot longer than it truly is. On paper, this should make for an hour in which listeners could happily lose themselves, but the overt abrasiveness of Sailles black-metal tendencies almost prohibit full immersion. Instead, the group aims for the gut more often than the brain, and tracks like the mechanized The Orion Prophecy and Revelations cant stand in too stark of a contrast to the similar, though still enjoyable, volleys of Tephra and Tremendous.
As the album flexes its darkness and morbidity and relies heavily on the tried-and-true tenets of black metal, debating whether or not Sailles reach exceeds its grasp becomes a pointless discussion. Rather, Irreversible Decay demands to be judged not on what is but on what is possible. The band has the chops; it clearly has an ear for solid metal, and it certainly has a thing or two to say about how to play heavy music. But thats the problem with a band announcing its intentions to steer black metal or any metal, for that matter in any direction other than straight ahead. Solid is no substitute for reinvention, and if any sphere of metal needs reinvention, symphonic black metal is it.
Still, with Irreversible Decay undoubtedly pointing towards an interesting future, Saille shows promise. Listeners in search of metal that relies more on orchestral bombast than on its own sense of doom may want to keep looking, but classic black-metal aficionados certainly can find plenty to love here.
3.5/5The Belgian Saille has come from out of nowhere and added its name to a storied and bulging foray known affectionately as black-symphonic, another overused and insidious metal tag. When one hears the term, one immediately conjures up visuals of some mildly-attractive woman fronting a very unattractive band to varying degrees of insipidity. Somewhere lost in all of this jargon is the blackness of the music; its usually buried under a very generic image and overtly-gothic tones. Saille manages to tread carefully the finest of lines between black and symphonic power metal and comes out no worse for wear.
The production being overly sound and crisp is what helps to make Irreversible Decay a solid black-and-blue effort (blue, in my eyes, appropriately shading the symphonic sound as a minor-key sorrowful tonal device). What might come off as otherwise bombastic blast beats over an Ihsahn-like vocal is saved from such comparisons in its revelry in the keyboard atmosphere. Overdose of Gray is nearly ten full minutes of destructive forces that clash violently in a myriad of furiousness and atmosphere, forgiving no sins and offering only conditional reprieve in the slower areas of the music.
Where this type of music usually lies raped in the dingy alleyways of the black metal movement, Saille provides us with nearly 45-minutes of powerful tunes that defy all of the usual typicality and rely more on creating a genuine surrounding of density and despair, all the while retaining brief glimpses of hope in the tangled design that is Irreversible Decay. The Orion Prophecy is one of my standouts in its haunting and trumpeting build-up to what then settles in to a Dissection-like vibe and levels the field accordingly. The lack of mundane and blueprint stigma is what helps keep this album viable and worth hearing multiple times.
The rash of recent symphonic-styled black metal bands is long, though the stellar ones are usually well noted in Carach Angren from the Netherlands or Thulcandra from Germany; these keys to the kingdom are the honest and integral among us and Saille is on its way to finding shelter in the shade of such fine acts. The music is very speedy, yet refined and well-constructed; the added feature of melody and effective chord changes makes Irreversible Decay a solid and triumphant beginning. I foresee this band only gaining momentum if they keep it up at this pace.
