:OMG: Stay cool, cold or as u are! First thing, its no duplicate of the Top 10 list. And is never gunna replace that thread and I dont intend that. I mean how many out there r patient or crazy enough to draw up a "top 50" except for ...well, we'll see! In fact I have a list that just keeps growing like a tree - nearly 100 ranked and another 100 or so unranked - but for me its a bit like a compass in the woods of the mega music industry. As you can see, I come a bit more from the rock stable than metal but I like the heavy, the hard and dark. Im pretty open minded but I cant stand boy bands and I cant stand bands more interested to "shock" or "show off "than the music. For example, Im wary of bands that have to wear masks, ya know what I mean?! If you want to convey something, you've got to do it through the music or forget it...........

:)

First, I think your genre definitions are really odd. What the hell is "western" style in Radiohead's OK Computer? Or LFDGD's "hard doomy Cure"? Weird. And second, your releasing years on Katatonia albums are all wrong... And in the other albums as well.

Well, enough of the whole napping, I'll put a few essential albums in my life here (no particular order):

Katatonia - Brave murder day
Katatonia - Last fair deal gone down
Katatonia - Tonight's decision
Novembre - Novembrine waltz
Radiohead - OK Computer
Sentenced - North from here
The Cure - Faith
Embraced - Within
Anathema - Judgement
Opeth - Damnation
Metallica - ...And justice for all
Black Sabbath - Black sabbath
Porcupine Tree - In absentia
Tenhi - Kauan
At the Gates - Terminal spirit disease
Death - Scream bloody gore
David Bowie - Hunky dory
Queens of the stoneage - Songs for the deaf
Mokoma - Kurimus

But to be honest, I don't think no one gives a damn about my favorite records.

Divat, fair comment. A lot of people think labelling a band or its music is pointless or even disrespectful and I appreciate that. But, while were on this topic, why are HMV and Virgin guilty of this? They have to file their stock. Otherwise some people'd be looking in their shop for a needle in a haystack!!! Obviously, if the public want to know what an album is about, they have to listen to it.

Just so u know, I originally prepared my list with my own private reference in mind. I just copied and pasted this list from my PC cos that was the easiest thing to do. Maybe Im a bit casual with my choice of words sometimes ...."doomy", hehe! Of course, I know the limitations of putting "genre labelling" there and I dont mean anyone on this forum to take them too seriously. Maybe I shouldve cut those details out but I thought I didnt have the time. Im new to this forum and I figure to put my interests here is a good way to start talking.

I put "western" by Radiohead's album cos, for my reference, I meant "Wild West movie style" was an influence for this album. So if one day I wanted to compose my own music with this influence, I might refer to this album again to see how Radiohead did it. It is well known that Ennio Morriconne was an inspiration for this album. Its blatantly clear in the fourth track Exit Music (For a Film) while in other places its there but a bit more subtle.

Some similarity to "Cure" was something that just struck me especially in the vocals of a few of the tracks on LFDGD. Maybe its just my point of view or just coincidence. Of course, Im DEFINITELY not saying that label defines the album!

Regarding dates, again, this list was originally for private reference and where I'm not sure about a date I put a "?" beside it. So if I got some dates wrong, sorry, but I post this to tell people my interests, not to pretend to people I got all the facts right!!!!

I think if youre serious about music you have to be interested in and looking out for influences etc

Divat, I see a lot of those on your list I quite like which gives me some confidence to maybe listen to some of the others on your list.
