I actually love it. I think it smoothes out the high end, and it makes my tones pretty much exactly what I wish/hoped they would be. I cannot stand fizzy, harsh, spikey high end, and this makes it so much smoother to me. Horses for courses I guess.

I know what you mean on the weird cymbal resonances. I try to find the cymbals with the least displeasing resonances/overtones, and then notch them out. On the snares I use a multiband around the low mids, and it seems to help the snares cut through the mix better, and get rid of muddiness.
