I'm looking into getting a laptop for mobile type audio recording. I have a rackmounted setup with the Firepod and other shite...My problem lies in finding a notebook PC with firewire. I can find plenty of them, but they are 4 pin or I link firewire ports. I know you can go from 4 pin to 6 pin and be OK, I do this with my Digital video and digital camera, but could I run a 6 pin output firepod into a 4 pin jack on a laptop and be OK?

I'd imagine that it'd work as I can run a 6pin to 4pin cable with my Fireface but if the unit is like the Fireface and operates off either bus power or adapter, the bus power wouldn't work with 4pins and you'd need to power it off the adapter.

I have to run my FA-101 with the adaptor on my windoze laptop with a 6-4 FW cable. The only problems I have with this is how unstable the port is physically, a slight knock and the cable can come loose.

I suggest getting a firewire card (PCI or PCMCIA for a laptop) that has 6-pin ports for a more stable connection.
